Aloha to all. I should be receiving my new Model 638 in a few days and want to pimp it out a bit. I'm looking at S&W Performance Center Gunsmith Services to do their magic on my new revolver. The service I am looking at is the Master Revolver Action Package ($185 for the Express Service). This would involve:

*Trigger Stop
*Chamfer Charge Holes
*Polish Rebound Spring, Hammer Stud and Yoke Barrel Bosses
*Detail Lockwork Surfaces
*Stone Hammer and Trigger Contact Areas
*Test Fire for Function

Has anyone used S&W gunsmith services and what are your experiences? I am looking to get the revolver to work at its highest level with a great and maybe lighter and smoother DA trigger pull. I would appreciate any and all feedback on this service.

I'd rather just have a reputable gunsmith do some action work, and the chamfering if I wanted it. I don't think I'd want a trigger stop or any lighter springs on a CC piece like the Model 638.

The work would be backed by S&W, so that'd be a plus. If you do end up getting it done, I'd be interested to hear what you thought of the work.

I don't have any local gunsmith that I could send it to. All work done by S&W would be backed up and that is a major factor in sending it to them. I sure that there are other reputable gunsmiths around the country that could get my gun to the specs I would want it to be but I would have to research it a bit.

There is a thread or two on this subject. Many members have had the master action package done. I have not heard any complaints just raves. I had the MAP done on my 14. Just a superb action now. I'm sending another one in for it next week.

I just had a 657 and 629 done. I am extremely happy with the work and speed of service.

Also had some warranty work on a 329PD. Eight day turnaround service.

I have two 629s there for the action work in addition to other services.

S&W has always treated me right. It is hard to find good smiths anymore. Plus, I would rather not void my warranty.

S&W Gunsmith's do excellent work. No worries. They have done 3 guns for me in the last year, all came back perfect.

I was thinking of sending my 629 in to S&W for some trigger work to lighten up the DA. Would this package do anything to help the DA?

My understanding is that the MAP does smooth out the trigger action but I don't know if it lightens up the pull.

fast turn around

sent in a 686 on tues + it was back on thurs = perfect repair + no charge.

I had my 686 done by s&w. I had the combat revolver package performed, which includes the master action package. Work was top notch and turn around time was about 3 weeks.

Master Revolver Action Package

I've had this "package" performed on a 5" 625 and a 629 MG and would not hesitate to take either into harm's way. The actions are smoother than they are lighter, though there is some reduction in spring weight.

The chamfering is great whether you use speedy reloaders or not, particularly in cold and/or wet weather where some dexterity is lost. This seemingly minor modification would help during an adrenaline dump or in the muscle fatigue that might proceed the gun's use, too.

Never had a misfire with either one, and I've fired over 1,000 rds through the 629MG since getting it back.

Both pieces were turned around and back to me within a couple of weeks.

Very pleased with the work and customer service.

I've had many guns done by the PC, often with the Master Action Job though not always. Work is uniformly superb, cost is reasonable, turn around time acceptable and they will modify the package as you require. If you request full strength spring be retained they'll knock down the price accordingly. Have no fears that they'll treat you right.

I sent my 625 back to the Performance Center upon purchasing it for the action job. It came back with the sweetest action I have ever felt. Totally recommended.

S&W refinishing service was great on my 19-3. Would use again.

The S&W PC did my 625. It was quite nice. Action was sound and reloading a snap.

Master Action Package - Very Good!

I sent my Model 586 4 inch to S&W for my action package
Because I am using it to compete in IDPA and USPSA, I bought the Jerry Miculek grip and the spring kit he sells. This made the action smoother
However I would say that for the model 638, a typical carry/backup gun the Master Action Package would be enough.
All the best

The PC does great work. But you might also check "cylinder and Slide" and TK custom. Both are also great..

You don't have to do the whole package. For example, if you don't want the charge holes chamfered, tell them not to do it.

In the past, I have simply asked for "duty action" and replace the standard firing pin with the performance center firing pin, which I understand eliminates any issues with light primer strikes. The work is always top notch.

The S&W Custom Shot

I've used it once. I shot the barrel out of a 4" S&W model 19 an sent it in to have a 6" barrel installed and the revolver re-blued. It came back like a new revolver not only visually, but able to hold a 1.5" group at 25 yards. I was impressed and compared to taking it to a local gunsmith was a bargain. I would not hesitate to send another gun in for factory repairs that I'm paying for. You definately get your money's worth from S&W,:)
