Looking for history of old 38 revolver

I inherited a S&W 38 Special from my grandfather who did police duty in Los Angeles during WW11. The serial number is872733. Can someone give me any history on this revolver and any value? Looks to have a 5 1/2" barrel.

you most likely have a S&W model Military & Police...the barrel..measured from the cylinder.... will be six inches....if the complete serial number is 872733 (from the butt of the revolver) it is from 1941....if the serial number has an "S" prefix it may be from 1946......
