Looking for info on 38 Special

Not just embarrassing, but unsafe when one considers the number of cops killed with their own guns. That lesson was learned slowly.

... The clamshell holster was popular with LEOs, although I don't know why?

It was quick to draw from and we all grew up watching Westerns so you want to; "get the drop on the outlaw".

Now Police Holsters are all about "Retention". Bad guy/gal can not easily do a gun grab on you but you are behind the eight-ball if you walk into an unreported robbery in progress.

Let me add my welcome, AlanKaf, and make the suggestion I always make in these situations. Gather and record as much information about your dad’s service with the gun as possible... approx when purchased, years of service, any interesting experiences he had, etc, etc. be sure to write it all down so that future generations can know and appreciate its history in the family. IMHO, it’s a very valuable family heirloom.

Great advice…in fact, that’s why I made my original request. I wanted to be able to provide my niece (who will be receiving this) with the history of the firearm. I’ve learned that it was about 33 years old when my dad purchased it used!
