I have an S&W Model 60. My friend insists that from when I bought it, new, in the 1980s, it must be a Model 60 dash something. Inside the yoke it just says MOD 60. The Serial no. is ADA3XXX. The barrel says .38 S. & W. SPL. It has a 1 7/8" barrel. On the box it came in there are Product Code numbers 102302 and 0600092021. I don't know if those numbers are helpful. Anyway, I would like to know if my model 60, is just that or has a dash something.

Quick check of the Standard Catalog 4th Edition shows it to be a 1985ish Model 60, no-dash, non-pinned barrel. The -2 is a 3-inch barrel square-but and a -3 is a NYCPD DAO model.

Welcome! The first model 60 variation was made from 1965 to 1988 and changed from the pinned to unpinned barrel (yours should have the latter type), as well as having a six-digit serial number, the R prefix and the three-letter/four digit format.

Sometimes S & W will add the "dash number" (engineering change) for a new gun variation, but sometimes will make two versions at the same time. With this model, at the same time the 60 was being made there were also two 60-1s and a 60-2; it was finally replaced by the 60-3 in 1988. And there were at least three types of those...long story. :)

This was my first post in this forum, which I joined only last night. I have experience with forums however, from a few years of Drone forums, where you can find the experts for any question. That is certainly true here as I read the three answers to my question. Thank you all for your superb information.
