I just inherited this gun from my father and am looking for any information about it. It's barely legible but it says "38 S&W Special US Service CTG" on the side of the barrel and has these patent dates on the top of the barrel Apr 9 80, Mar 27 94, Oct 4 98, Oct 8 01 Dec 17 01. It has a 5 digit serial number with no letters and no address stamped on it. Any info would be great, very interested in the model and age.

Welcome! It is a .38 Military & Police model of 1902. The barrel stamping "US Service CTG" refers to the .38 Long Colt, a slightly shorter round than the .38 Special, and is specific to this particular model and age.

We would need the serial number (from the flat bottom of the grip frame) to give you its age, but these were made between 1902 and 1905.

Hi Murphydog

The serial number is 44699. No letters. Are there parts available for these? I'd like to put some nicer stocks on it.

It looks like a round butt so any K frame round butt stocks will work. Someone will be along to tell you what to look for specifically if you want era correct stocks.

SCSW 4th Edition is kind of the S&W Bible.
It says .38 M&P Model of 1902, 1st Change...
Serial number range 33804 to 62449 manufactured 1903-1904.
Checkered hard rubber grips (black) with S&W monograms, or checkered diamond walnut.
Some folks would have some of those grips for sale, or as you were told any round butt K frame grip will work.

Also, there are pretty good reproduction round butt K-Frame grips of the correct appearance available. They are usually black plastic, not hard rubber.
