Looking for some info on a beginner pistol.

Sorry ab4ka... I couldn't resist!

Bet they'll have a 617 10-shot over at Targetmaster... and it's Big Brother, the 686 too.
Why not give them a try while you're at it... just for grins ???

showoff :D

I love the 686, but I've yet to get my hands on a 617 :(

Sigma, Sigma, Sigma! Great bang for the buck, every time you pull the trigger. You can buy one now for $249. shipped from Buds after the $50 dollar rebate.

Well Ladies and Gent. I'm pretty impulsive but still a proud owner of a Walther PPS 9mm.

I checked out the 380, the Sig, and the Glock and the PPS just felt the best, light, easy to use and the 9 mm was a great selection over the 380. Not to mention it had a pretty hefty discount. and better material.

But I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and I'll let you guys know how my future goes with my new baby. haha. I suspect I will be at the gun range a lot in 2010.

I'll post pics sometime soon.

Thank you all again!

Personally i think a K-frame sized .38 revolver is the best beginner handgun. But thats just my opinion.

I'll share that opinion and add to it. Get a model 15. It has the adjustable sights. Put the wooden grips in your sock drawer and put on a set of Houge rubbers. They fit my hand great. shoot the crap out of it with standard or +p ammo. You can even get CCI rat shot to take care of, well, rats and snakes.

IMHO you should have started out the Sigma in 9MM., its a great starter gun in semiauto. I just started shooting last November with a sigma 9mm, liked it and just traded up to a M&P 9mm as I like the ergonomics of the M&P more. That walther looks awefully small for a starter. Hope you enjoy it.

Thank you guys for the great suggestions!

I appreciate the opinion regarding the Walther. I am quite a fan of the Walther pistol, but that might be the James Bond Fanatic speaking through me. I have, however, shot a .22 Pistol. I can't recall which make. But I remember enjoying it. Mostly because it allowed me to paint the bullseye which may be attributed to the lack of recoil. Therefor, I think I wanna start with a larger caliber. 9mm or .38.

But this is all skeptics. I'll go to a shop and see which one feels right in my hand, the weight, the sites, etc.

As for the .38 revolver. I think I want to stick with a Semi-auto clip than begin with a revolver. Though I'm sure it has amazing qualities and I see myself purchasing a revolver down the road.

So I guess this boils down to the sigma.

I think it's fair to inform you what the use of this pistol will be for. Mostly recreation, 2nd amendment, and self defense. In that order. I don't believe I will be needing it for defense and I haven't submitted for a carrier's permit. My budget ranges between $300-$500. So I'm trying to work with that.

Thanks again, any more suggestions would be great. I'll keep my eye open for what you guys are talking about. Thanks again!
Day late anbd a dollar short, but these were my suggestions.
Though I am happy with my Sigma 9mm, let me throw out some other suggestions -- the Ruger P95. Solid design, years of reliability and not bad looking, also in your price arena. Also the Taurus PT 24/7, which receives high marks.

I am sorry. Is this the SMITH & WESSON forum? Glock makes great pistols, but sometimes all the banter about them on this board feels like Chevy guys beating up the Ford guys on their forum. Oh well, no matter. Buy what you want, get proficient using it, be responsible and have fun.

Think I will run over to Glock Talk and see what they are doing...

Yeah it's definitely a smaller gun. It comes with an extending grip for bigger palms. I guess I wouldn't say I'm a beginner. I just never got into pistols, I'm quite proficient with other weapons. My cousin has a Sig. I just gave him a call about the news. So I think we'll have a good time trading off when we're together.

But I like it, it's smaller, concealable, and has a nice kick. It's going to take some time but I hope to be very good with this pistol down the road.

Thanks again everyone.

And for the record, I drive a GT Mustang, and I'd take a chevy for their money any day ;) haha.

Thanks again!

if you like the walther, i highly recommend looking at a Bersa.

you can get a Pro 9mm up to 17 mag capacity or a Pro 40 up to 13 capacity for about $350.00. they come in matte or nickel finish, have a full lifetime warranty & are awesome pistols.

i own three & they are all more accurate than i am, feed flawlessly & are a complete joy to shoot.

I've got a Walther PPS and I like it. It's easy to operate, take down and put back together. It's sturdy enough to shoot often without punishing recoil yet small enough to carry easily. You will get very good with it very quickly.

That's what I like to see.

I think I will have a great time getting along with this pistol. I just filled out my concealer's permit. So hopefully I'll have that coming in soon.
