Okay, I have a Model 66-5 with 2.5 bbl. After reading a few things about the -5, I'm a little confused. I've read that the 66-5 has MIM parts. Good, bad, doesn't really matter that much? I've also read that that was when S&W started using the internal lock. Mine doesn't have a lock. So, am I to assume that this is one of the earlier -5's?

Right off the Bat - we have some that would cry if thier Ice cream was cold. There is nothing wrong with you revolver - some will cry about the MIM parts - they are just as good as any others that have been made. Cry about the frame mounted firing pin - I just want one of them to show me a Smith K frame 22 without it. All in all this is the best bunch of people on the net, you read and soak what you want to learn, forget or over look the rest :D . To me the -5 is the best one for a working gun, it will out last you for sure. PLUS there is nothing wrong with the ones with the lock, if you don't like it - then remove it, if you don't want it - don't buy it, BUT don't shove down anyones thoart what you think, the good Lord gave them a brain to think for themself. Enjoy your 66-5 and go to the range with a smile on your face because you are packing the best - all other brands are #2 and trying harder.

The Mod 66 with the 2 1/2 inch barrel is to me one of the classics the Smith has made. I have a 66-1 and love it, easy to shoot, easy to cc and easy to maintain. I think all of these guns will last longer than our lifetimes, whether MIM parts or not and whether IL or not.

Happy shooting.

So, if you're like me and not a collector, who cares about the MIM stuff. That's pretty much what I was thinking. But you know, you start reading a lot of different stuff and it gets you thinking. But hey, it's a Smith. Why worry, right?

I couldn't have said it better.
