Hey all,

Looking for the best wooden boot grips for pocket carry. Spegel is booked out 3 years which is not going to work. So looking at the eagle and Altamont boot grip. Anyone have experience with both? Trying to decide which route to go. I don’t want to go the laminate route but Altamont does have the Santos rosewood and eagle has rosewood as well.

Also saw esmereldas which look very nice - open to other options for wooden boot grip. Any input would be appreciated.

These will be put on a MP340

Eagles are a direct rip-off of Spegel's design. At least the old set I have is. I had no idea until I got a set of actual Craig Spegel boot grips and then I was kind of offended that Eagle did that.

On the other hand, I get it, for carrying and shooting his Boot Grip design is in my opinion, perfection.

You may just do what I unintentionally did; get a pair of inferior Eagles, which work just fine, and then wait for Craig to make you a real set (or get a pair of them on ebay/gunbroker where they do pop up form time to time.)

I prefer Altamont for purely aesthetic reasons, they just plain look nicer to me, and they fit my hands nicely too, so it's a win-win.

From personal experience (and for my hands) I would go with the Eagle as noted they are closer to Spegel. I think the checkered Secret Service grips are perfect. Altamont noticeably thicker at bottom, but they have locator pins and very secure and well made.

My Culina J frame grips are more expensive than Altamont, but they look great and slide out of my pocket easily.

My 642 has Altamont smooth rosewood boot grips. They fit well, and I like the look, feel, price, and fast delivery.

I have no experience with the others mentioned above.

Altamont's on Model 637-2

I bought the Model 637-2 almost 20 years ago. I bought it used, but the original buyer only had it a few months. It is a 2002, and it came with the Altamont grips shown below. According to the original owner the grips were listed as a $75.00 upcharge over the standard Magna's.

Personally, even in 2002 I wouldn't have paid that high of an "upcharge" so I don't know for a fact (no box, no paperwork) but I do know that they are the most comfortable, best fit and grip for my hands on any J Frame and I have carried J Frame since 1971.

All the grips in the pictures seem a little bulkier than the normal boot grips. How do they do in the pocket? I don’t wear baggy clothes and am athletic build, but do like the idea of a little more purchase on the grip

I was looking at the Eagle Secret Service page and noticed it says “fits 60, 640, etc... does NOT fit Airweight.”

Spegel is the answer

I know that his backlog is long, but there are other answers - i.e. the Uncle Mike's rubber version of his boot grips are out there and can "stand in" until he can make you a wood version.
I've been carrying this M38 in my pocket every day for 12+ years, the checkered aspect is no worry, it does not cause any issues with the draw. My holster is the original Kramer horsehide pocket holster and has held up very well.
Know that he has three designs for the J frame, regular, high horn for the Bodyguard and high horn for the Centennial Smiths. These are the Bodyguard high horn.

I have been on Spegal's revolver list for almost 3 years now. The move he made to Idaho slowed things down a bit.
I'm waiting to order a set for my 12-2 snubby. I am debating on checkered or not still.
It has been an exercise in patience though with other grip makers. No one seems to be able to handle the narrow frame for it. I have contacted several.

So I am just patiently waiting till I come up on Spegal's list... ...or at least trying...
