Looking to get into a model 19

I have several 19's, a -5 and -3. I prefer the -3 with the P&R but there's no flies on the -5.

Basically anything built in the 60's, 70's would be very nice.

I prefer the 6" for range work, 2 1/2" for hiking and carry. Don't own a 4". :(

I think the L is the best frame size for 357, not the K. But that's just me. I shoot my 19's a bunch.

When I was toting issued revolvers a 19 was carried for a lot of miles. The one I was issued had a 4" barrel, not tapered. A good revolver for the cartridge.

I shot a lot with that revolver. Also had a couple of 686s, one 4" and one 6". Carried the 4" on duty for about a week. At the end of the day, a HUGE difference. Went back to the 19.

Good luck finding the ones you want. Wish I still had mine so I could sell it to you.

well thank you sir ill be jumping on the interwebs here in a few to start my endeavor into the territory of model 19's

what is a reasonable price to pay to for say a decent condition dash 3?

About 7 years ago I stopped in my local shop. Small. Owner was out and had dopey son at counter. I saw a mint, flawless, 19-2 4" prices at $249. $263 out the door. Kid said nobody wants revolvers anymore.

I sold it 6 months later. Tripled my money but I figured it was too nice to shoot. One of my biggest gun sale regrets.

Wow if only all the shops had dopey kids working the counter Haha you got that for a steal!

Twenty three years ago a fellow that worked under me asked if I could loan him $100.00. My reply was what have you got for security. He showed me a S&W 19-2 6" with black and white cowboy plastic grips. Short story he couldn't pay me back so I got it. I sent it to S&W to be factory reconditioned. Cost me about $250. My son has it now and he has turned down $1800.00.

It is a beauty with very little firing.

Get a P&R (19-4 or earlier) for collecting, but a Model 19 for tons of shooting, I'd get one of the brand new 19-9's. People like to poo-poo the 2-piece barrel system, but Dan Wesson pioneered that system and it makes for a very accurate barrel. The crane-frame front lock system on the 19-9 is superior to the ejector rod lock system of older S&W's.

That's a good question. Personally I wouldn't go over $900 because there were lots of those built. I'm stuck in a time warp when it comes to older Smiths. I do realize that very few people are going to sell a 2 1/2" 19 or 66, so finding one will be difficult for that price. I absolutely would not sell mine for that price.

I have a pretty nice 19-6 that dates to 1989. Not collectable but it has most of the upgraded features. I tend to favor the guns from the late 80s and 90s so this one fits in perfect with my collection.
