Looking to Identify my grandfather's S&W Revolver possible service weapon. Serial on the butt is 39752. To open, muzzle hinges and points down. I believe it's a .38 but cannot confirm. The pictures are of poor quality.

Pictures are attached

Any help will be apreciated

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! It's a .38 Double Action, 4th Model made around 1900. That style of frame is called a "top break." IMO, the barrel has been cut at some point in its life and it was likely refinished.

Nice 38 S&W revolver. It fires the early 38 S&W cartridge that was designed in 1876. Guy is correct on the model number and approximate manufacture date. The odds are the barrel is cut down after it left the factory. An original factory 2" barrel on the 38 Double Action frame is very uncommon. To tell if its probably original we need better pictures of the gun, especially the top of the barrel, the end of the barrel, and the side of the front sight and how it was attached.

Love the short barrel on the gun, looks great.
