This is my first post here although I have lurked for sometime. I recently bought a Model 65-3 w/3" bbl. I'm sure it is some sort of agency trade-in but not sure where from. It shows external wear and minor scratches but nothing serious, although I'm definitely not an expert or experienced. I am somewhat confused by the numbers stamped on this gun. The number on the crane is matched on the side of the grip frame under the stock on the left side. The number on the bottom of the grip frame is different. Example: Crane and grip frame under stock-966XX. Bottom of grip frame-ANS49XX

The main concern for me is the play in the cylinder. It has about 1/32" rotational play. None of my other Smith's have this much. Using a feeler gage, I get about .002 bbl/cyl gap. There is no noticeable front to back play.

Besides the serial(?) number conflict, I would appreciate any comments on the looseness of the cylinder. If it needs attention, I'm not sure what I will do since competent gunsmiths are somewhat scarce around here(West TN). I feel sure that if I took it to one he would assure me that he could fix it. Also I don't want to spend a great deal of $$ since this is intended to be a carry gun. I'm not too interested in the appearance.

Thanks
John

seems ok

Sounds ok, is there any extra wear on the cylinder notches or the cylinder stop.

without seeing the gun it is hard to guess, maybe a new cylinder stop is needed.

how is the timing as well.

how does it shoot

When the trigger is pulled all the way back, How much cylinder play is there now?
If still play, Time for a new cylinder stop!

Thanks for the replies.

sal1911a1 and pred: The cylinder notches show minimum wear. At least to my untrained eye. The cylinder stop may be worn since there is no difference in the cylinder play with hammer forward or held back. Is this difficult to replace? Would a gunsmith have this part on hand?

I haven't had time to shoot it. I've got one box ot .357 Mag and no .38 Spec. I didn't want to use up that box of .357 mag and not be able to replace it. Had planned to cast some bullets and make up some reloads but haven't gotten around to it. Bad time of year.
