Lost my best friend

rolomac, I know exactly what you are going through. We lost our wolf dog Kira, to a sudden ailment that there was no recovering from and had to end her misery a couple months ago. I pray that God will put His healing hand on your heart to help you through this time of sorrow. At least you had 9 wonderful years with Charlie; we didn't get but 5 years with Kira and I still miss her terribly.

But, God does move in mysterious ways and on the day we had to put Kira down, He introduced us to a cute little kitten named Cooper at PetSmart while waiting for the doctor to get in to put Kira to sleep. We adopted him from the rescue shelter that had put him in PetSmart and he is just what our aching hearts needed to help us through Kira's loss.

my condolences....after losing my best bud of 16 years to heart failure....I know the pain you feel.... reading about others loss...always brings a lump to my throat

Very sorry for your loss. He was a cute dog.

We went through that last may with our Lizzy. It rips your heart out, and I still get sad when I think about her.

Where To Bury A Dog

There are various places within which a dog may be buried. We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a good dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder. These are good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter, and it touches sentiment more than anything else.

For if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, questing, asking, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where that dog sleeps at long and at last. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land, where most exhilarating cattle graze. It is all one to the dog, and all one to you, and nothing is gained, and nothing lost -- if memory lives. But there is one best place to bury a dog. One place that is best of all.

If you bury him in this spot, the secret of which you must already have, he will come to you when you call -- come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they should not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he is yours and he belongs there.

People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper pitched too fine for mere audition, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them then, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.

The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.

Loss & gain - the circle of life

I know your pain. After I put my first guy down (Max - on the left), who had been at my side daily for over 14 years, I cried like a baby. It was an awful empty feeling. But when the time was right, I got his successor, Bruno (on the right).

Max is buried in a place of honor in the back yard under a Holly Tree with a very nice marker, and I keep the spot tidy. An 8X10 pic of him sits in a prominent spot in the house that I see and smile at regularly. He was the greatest family dog & watchdog a guy could ever hope for, but he's gone now. I no longer hurt for his company because unlike parents who lose children, we people know we must outlive our pets (if we're lucky enough anyway). I miss his company, but don't hurt for it anymore.

Why don't I hurt for his company anymore? In a word, Bruno! This clown has really captured our hearts and is doing a fine job in his own, unique way. No two dogs are alike, and my loss of Max just helps me cherish each day and each moment all the more with this new guy. I hope you will someday be in a position to replace your little fella, and hope you find another great one.

I am truly sorry for your loss, and wish you the very best in your future.

My heart goes out to you. The loss of a special loved dog is one of the hardest things on earth to have to bear.

I also prematurely lost such a dog 19 years ago. Coincidentally, his name was Charley, named for the dog in Steinbeck's book Travels with Charley. He was a bedraggled stray puppy that I picked up on the street early one morning on the way to work, and he became my best friend.

They say the best place to bury a dog is in your heart. My heart is now the graveyard of a dozen wonderful dogs, and I look forward to meeting them all again on the other side of the rainbow bridge someday.

Pet's are a part of the family that give love and receive love from us.
It's hard to lose a pet family member but take comfort that you provided for him and loved him while he was with you.

Im sorry for your loss. Your best friend will be waiting for your arrival in a few decades-and to renew your routine.

I hate these strings, for many reasons. My condolences.

The best tribute to a good dog and the gap left is to seek out and find a successor, who needs you as much as you need him or her.

It's a hard thing to lose such a friend. They give more than we ever could, and ask for nothing in return. Sorry for your loss.

Prayers sent. Blessings on you for doing what's right for Charlie...will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge.

These threads are awfully hard to read; they keep getting blurry.
