Don't know why people tend to dislike this pistol. Highly accurate and looks great especially with new sights and a few customizations.

Welcome..In the past people on this forum have had problems with the SD9.Hope you got a good one.I have a SD9VE that I like so much I got rid of a G19 she shot good I just couldn't get use to the grip and didn't like spent shell hitting me in the face

I've put 700 rounds through it, including my CCW class, and have never had any type of issue. Not a single misfire, stovepipe, nothing.

I'm glad to hear that, as I just picked up a "cherry" SD9 yesterday. I've already ordered the Galloway "wide body take down plate", Tractiongrips, and the Apex spring kit. I got this gun because it was cheap, and will make a good center console/tractor gun.

Nice to know!

I know virtually nothing about these - what are the various modifications that you made? I see the sights but I don't know if they are after market or not and what is "ROSER"?

I never got the impression they did. They seem to largely get very good reports from owners. I've been casually on the lookout for one on my local classifieds for a good while now, and they almost never pop up, and when they do they aren't priced significantly lower than new ones, yet they still get snagged quick.
Nope, no tendency to dislike them that I've ever observed. ;)

The SD family still bears some of the negativity that was associated with early Sigmas... today, that negativity is really not deserved. The SDs are very good value for the money, and are reliable and accurate. It is amazing how many reviews of the pistol in more recent years are very positive - like, "hey, this pistol is pretty good!" after the reviewer had expectations of a poorly made pistol.

The trigger is another matter. It sometimes garners some condescension by those who prefer a pistol with a better "target" or competition-style trigger. People who get used to it, and those who treat it just like a double-action revolver trigger, get along fine. Folks who are looking for that trigger with more of a decisive "break" like a good Sig-Sauer or a well-made 1911, well, those folks don't like the longish and heavy trigger of the SD. To be fair, though, it's part of the "self defense" role of the pistol - and not so hard to use once it is broken-in and the shooter has learned to master it.

Yep that's what I disliked about my SD40VE. Great shooter, ate everything I fed it but I just couldn't get past the trigger so I gave it to my buddy who loves his SD9 and bought an M&P40

Yeah, I think I might have been a little unclear. What I meant was that people tend to dislike the trigger, and they seem to take it out on the pistol overall until they replace it.

I like the trigger just fine, in fact I like the fact that it is a self-defense trigger.

ROSER is my last name, just wanted to personalize it with a custom laser-engraved rear slide plate from Laser's Edge Studios.

The white lettering I did by rubbing a white crayon across the stampings until filled, then removing the excess with a paper towel lightly sprayed with WD-40...Once the excess crayon is removed, and THE WD-40 IS EVAPORATED (I can't stress that enough), run a lighter back and forth across the stampings until the crayon melts and settles into the stampings. Then just let it cool and do the other side.

I've put a couple hundred rounds throught it and the crayon is staying put just fine.

I can see that, but the trigger is a big part of a firearm. It it the only reason I got rid of mine same as how I won't buy a glock because I hate the way they feel in my hand. It probably doesn't help that the SD's are the low end of the S&W line which turns certain people off to begin with

That's what the appeal was for me, as far a being a low-cost entry level pistol. I've owned long guns for years, but never thought much about a pistol until the last couple of years. I'm still educating myself about my own weapon and others. I'm quite happy with the value of this firearm, but I'm certainly under no illusions that it's anything other than a base-model handgun.

I intend to buy another handgun after the first of the year for concealed carry, and keep this one ready for use at home.

Any suggestions for a next-level pistol from anyone? I'm not a S&W loyalist by any means, but if anyone has feedback on any of their offerings I'd appreciate it. I don't want to spend more than $1,000, and would prefer to stay closer to $800.

Thanks!

My humble suggestion for a excellent conceal carry pistol is the Kahr K9. Get it with night sights, you'll love it.

So, after taking into account many opinions and suggestions from many sources, I finally decided on a second pistol, a little better suited for concealed carry.

I just paid for a Kimber Micro 9 Woodland Night (LG), but got smacked with a 3 day wait until I can pick it up. Oh well.

Any thoughts on the Kimber?

Academy Sports has both the SD9 and the SD40 on their website (ships to store) with the FDE frame and black slide for $299. The SD9 is currently out of stock, and I'm hoping they will get another one...I'd sure like to get one. I've always liked that color combination.
