Love the 686s - pic thread

the 686 is one of the best guns S&W ever produced in Stainless. I have a 8-3/8 silhouette, 8-3/8 regular w/scope rigs and a 6' and they all shoot great. Next is my 8-3/8 460 and my beautiful blued 8-3/8 Model 25. Have a hard time determining which of them to take to the range.

The 686 8-3/8 is probably my favorite and loves 148gr wad cutters. chews the center out of a bullseye target at 25-50 yards.

Blue70, nice 100th post.

Good catch. Didn't even notice it. The funny thing about this thread is that last summer I passed on a 686 no dash cause it was a 6" gun and the guy was asking $350 for it. I passed on it as I had no desire for a 6" and I felt $350 was too much (I've been getting them for $100-$150 from guys at work) So I let my friend buy it.. lol :D

Icky lock version 686+ 4"!

I had one just like this one that I acquired and when I got into a bind I sold it last year for $600+200 rounds .40 ammo. I thought I had this particular revolver role covered with my Wiley Clapp GP100, so I kept that one instead at the time. Shot a buddy's 3" that he picked up just a couple weeks back, and said I needed to find another. Managed to stumble into this one last week at the LGS for $560otd and just got done cleaning her from her first outing...such a sweet, sweet shooter. Definitely not making that mistake twice. Now to find a matching 617 partner. :D

I was after a pre-lock 686 and this one showed up locally. It had the rubber grips on it which are not my favorites as I prefer traditional looking grips:) Did some trigger and spring work on a friends 586 and he offered me his target grips in exchange:D That worked!

Really loving this gun all dialed in and smoothed out on trigger and action. My grandson has taken a liking to it too:)

My dads 686-2 on top and my 686-1 on the bottom. Had them both out this past weekend. My father let me bring home his so I could give it a proper cleaning and lube.

Interesting fact about the -2 is that it's a 38 special only gun. It couldn't even be easily swapped to a .357 magnum since the cylinder is physically shorter and the barrel extends through the frame more than the standard guns. Makes me wonder if these were one off type cylinders? Either way, it's a pleasure to shoot 38+p through it and even rapid fire the front heavy gun stays on target with ease. Although I don't usually rapid fire my revolvers often it was definitely a treat. Too bad I have to bring it back to him this weekend! I'll try and get a couple outside pics of them with better lighting.

Well, its been almost 2 years since I started this thread and its nice to see it still going strong! As you can see my family has grown a bit in the past 2 years. Its getting harder to get them all together for the family photo!

I believe the 686 to be the finest .357 magnum made. It was the first gun I ever carried as a law enforcement officer in 1986 and I have loved it ever since. I have recently been able to acquire a few, the most recent of which is a 686-4 7 shot snubbie. It didn't come with the factory stocks, so I decided to try a set of VZ G-10's. The fit is perfect. The tolerances are so tight that the screw is merely cosmetic. They feel great in the hand, too. I'm looking forward to shooting it very soon.

If I could grab only one revolver as I headed out for TEOTWAWKI.....it would be my round butt 686-nuttin..... w/ an action job and Spegel extended Boot Grips..... it's my "go to" all purpose .357magnum.

I noticed that many of these 686's have a polished finish. I have two 686-4's. One is more polished than the other. Were any of the 686's polished at the factory or were they all originally bushed stainless?

This 686 no dash was the first brand new S&W revolver I ever purchased, shown here with the custom box my Dad built for it well over 30 years ago. I've posted these before, but always like to add them to any 686 thread...
