Lower vise block

I made a lower vice block for my M&P 22-15 and it seems to work ok. I haven't used it for much more than holding the rifle in the vise while I do light work on it. Is there any reason I couldn't do the same for the big brother, instead of paying fifty bucks for a plastic version? All advice welcome. On the 15-22 I did cut in a place for the mag catch to engage in.

No reason at all. That's how the plastic versions came around although mine didnt cost $50

I'm building one right now using a piece of exotic Zebra wood.
I intend to copy the Pmag dimensions so it will fit snug and lock in. I'm using calipers to copy the dimensions as close as I can. I may use it as a display stand or a vise block-haven't got that far yet. Not sure if i'm going to follow the curve of the mag or just make it straight?
But it beats paying for a plastic one.

I bought my set of blocks, upper lower and barrel blocks for around $40, plus I have a set of Tacticool aluminum barrel blocks which I also recommend.

We just went to a local metal machine shop and found some scrap aluminum. Guy gave use the scraps for free and even cut it to size for us. Then with a few minutes work and a little clean up we had vice blocks.

I've also seen people take a regular aluminum magazine and fill it with epoxy. One guy I know actually melted down some plastic and filled a damaged Pmag with it, and i've seen people fill a Pmag with epoxy also. All worked fine. The epoxy might cost you some though, and melting down enough plastic is a pain. They don't need to be curved.

Only problem I've had with the range box style blocks (or others),the stupid box is WAY to light to set up and work on your AR. Works great in a vise though. We need to make a Range Trailer with set up shooting benchs,tool working area,reloading station. ....A "Man Cave on Wheels".

My aluminum barrel vise blocks are a very soft aluminum so as to not mar the barrel and the price was real reasonable.

I had the same idea about using an old mag, I even posted in the "Want to Buy" section. Apparently these mags last forever, as none were forthcoming. Thanks for all the responses. Happy Thanksgiving and shooting.
