What did everyone get from the auction today? There seemed to be heavy action from the onsite bidders, but several online bidders were successful.

I went to $2k on the .44 2nd Model Target and $2,750 on the K32 but failed miserably on both. Hopefully I wasn't bidding against mchom....that other user ID looked familiar. I did escape with the 4" 24-3 for only $900 though. Apparently everyone was saving their money for the classics.

Did Don get the Club Gun?

I wasn't a player, but I drove to Cody three times last year to pick
up a Chiefs Special I'd won.

Great folks. One of the gals gave me the "tour" of their facility
when I was there two days before Christmas. Eye watering.

I would save about $300 if I let them ship my winnings to my lgs,
but I like Cody. Gas, lunch, a stop at my favorite spirits store --
Pro-pri-e-tres -- to see Michelle is always fun, and it's a gorgeous
360-mile round trip. Why wouldn't I go?

I was interested in the Boulder CO, Chief of Police Prater OD/w box. I ended up bowing out.

I did make a futile stab at the 1917 club gun. Didn’t win anything today.

Congrats on 24-3
Great deal!!!

Yeah, my bids on the club gun went by when the bid counter was spinning like a slot machine. The Boulder OD was in my watch list but I skipped it to throw a chunk at the Pre-29....which I also didn't get.

I guess I'll just have to be happy with the 24-3 and the transitional Outdoorsman that I picked up last week. :D

What was the story on the Pre-29…..4 or 5 screw, barrel length, finish, price it sold for?

Oh it was nothing special. Just a lettered 1956 Pre-29 5 screw, 4" barrel, 3 T's, red ramp front, with a black presentation box, knurled handled blued sight tool, and a beautiful set of Cokes. The kind of thing you see every day.

It sold for $4,000 plus a 22% auction fee.

Yeah, just a ho-hum regular ole piece I see! That was probably a pretty good price for it…….except for the added fee.

I threw out a bid on the 8 3/4" RM but got shot down in short order. The onsite bidders came with their pockets full of money and didn't mind spending it. A last second $3000 bid may have put me in the "greater fool" category but I'll get over it. Sorry coach.:)

That matches my experience.....there was deep money in that room.

Without getting into a bunch of socio-economic theory, I think we're at an inflection point in the pricing of classic guns. It's very similar to what happened to classic cars but with one less zero in the price tag. More people are realizing that a "steel 401k" does actually accumulate value and we have some new players looking to build collections. None of the things that went by in that auction are going to show up on Gunbroker for a quick flip - the prices were too high for that. In my opinion, these were buy and hold purchases from people looking to park some money in durable goods.

It's a good thing for the value of what we already have, but it sure makes the search for a good deal more interesting.

There also seemed to be a fair amount of auction fever going on. Depending on the luck of the draw that can sometimes be an advantage. I got a reasonable (but not remarkable) deal on a gun that normally would sell for more because it was very early in a list filled with high dollar items that people were waiting for. Other times I've had good luck buying at the very end when everyone else was tapped out. Occasionally I get lucky when a Smith & Wesson is listed in the middle of 100 Winchesters and the crowd has other interests.

Sometimes it's just that the "other guy" is in the bathroom. :D

It's all part of what makes it fun. I did manage to get two trigger jobs done between items I was watching, so there is that.

Very interesting analysis on the current state of affairs. Now I have this burning desire to acquire a non-model marked 4 screw K32 Masterpiece.

OP I think you accurately described the state of gun collecting in post 9. Hopefully it doesn’t go the way of the custom motorcycle, chopper craze 10 yrs ago. You can’t give them away now.

People, and thus markets, are fickle. What one generation loves another may ignore. Buy the neat old pieces of iron because you love them, not because you think you can beat the stock market with them. Our kids, and grandkids, may just see them as "old pieces of iron."

Darn, I missed that one. I wish the forum would allow auctions to be advertised in advance. Maybe under Dealer category???? I did notice a RIA auction listed there recently.

That would really be a bad, bad idea for two reasons:

1. There’s already too much competition without further advertisement;

2. My wallet cannot handle another auction. The number of firearms related auction houses, and the inventory they attract, is frankly amazing! Another one seems to spring up just about every other month.

Now that it’s over, can someone post a link to the completed auction, with hammer prices, so I can see what I missed out on?

I made a run at several guns, including the Boulder Chief Outdoorsman, the 1917 Club gun, and an inscribed Colt pre-National Match. All went too high for my wallet. The really unique and rare guns are bringing big money but others that aren’t so special didn’t sell high. The 98% 2nd Model Target .44 Special sold for $2,250 and the 99% 3rd Model .44 5” only hammered at $2,000. I passed on several I probably should have tried for but I was saving my money for others that I ended up not having a reasonable chance at.

I have bought from LSB in the past and it was a very positive experience they even compensated for my error, I will definitely purchase from them again

If you go to Lock Stock and Barrel home page you can view the complete auction catalog, including sold prices. Nice folks to deal with and when I take something over to sell or to pick something up I can take my wife to lunch at the Proud Cut Saloon! Nice 340 mile round trip.
