I have just found a nice 27-2. Condition is in the 97% range as it was shot some..Price is what I consider reasonable at 475.. but no box. Heck it is in a Pachmayr range box right now..where it has resided since the mid 80s. It is TT TS TH but the barrel length is really out there at the 8 3/8 inch. Does the barrel length hurt resale price badly? I am more into short bbls so will probably sell it to finance a 4 inch gun..maybe a 3 1/2 or 5?? lol Must be some out there who like these long ones. But ya know..I will have to try it out. I will post a pic or two tomorrow

Well if it is stealing it what would a 27-2 with the long bbl be worth on the sellers market. I wasn't keen on buying a gun that you could beat something over the head with if ya missed it 6 times!! LOL

If truly 97% it should be in the $750 to $900 range; more with box and papers. Plenty of folks wanting 27-2s. . . including the long barrel ones.
I've got a couple of the 8 3/8s but if I found another one for $475 as you describe, I'd have three. Good luck.

Well it truly is 97% in my opinion of course. Nice gun but like I said...wayyy too long for my purposes. Wish I had the box and papers. I have a box for a 6 inch but not one this long. The liner in it is still in good condition. It actually came from a 6 inch 27-2 I had. Actually...I have the papers for a 27-2 in the wooden box..

The price is surprisingly low so be sure you check carefully for issues not yet mentioned. It's true 8 3/8" guns are not as popular but boy do they shoot great! The long sight radius and lessened recoil make the long tubes great fun to shoot.

I've checked it over pretty well. Couple of areas of thinning blue no real dings on the grips. lockup is tight just a pretty gun..I bought a 28-2 the other day in about as good condition and paid a little more. But it is a 4 inch. with correct grips also. Unfortunately it had no box either.. Pics were posted on it on another thread. I know how to appraise guns. Had a gun shop in Md for 27 years..just never dealt with handguns there..Didn't want to deal with their draconian handgun laws..Even worse today. It was shotgun and 22 country so that is what I bought and sold. And the fellow wants to sell it so he can buy a gun he can carry working on his cattle ranch. Not his actually. He is a cowboy..yep we still have real cowboys(and cowgirls) here. Seriously

I would have 2, you can buy that gun for $475 and make a quick 50% profit probably right on this board.

If the question is wether or not to get it then then answer is a "no-brainer." Certainly. When's the next time your going to find a high condition P&R N-frame for under $500? Probably never. If you like to plink or target shoot I'll bet you'll take a liking to the 8 3/8".
John
I love no-brainers.

Thanks for the input.

I will post pics of the gun later. I really don't have much expertise with S&W pricing. Never messed with handguns all that much till I moved here to Wyoming. So that is why I ask so many questions esp on pricing. I actually paid a bit more than 475 as I gave the fellow a set of K frame target grips..A bit beat up. I got them at a gun show last weekend in a vendors junk box for 5 dollars..At the same time I got a set of J frame targets for 15..from the same junk box. I love junk boxes. I got an as new 410 610 Lyman mold out of the same box..in its orginal box for 5 bucks. It is a hollowpoint mold but had no HP pin. I'll turn one out on my lathe later this week. Boy the bbl on this thing is really long. If I miss with the ammo I'll just whack it over the head.

I saw a 3-1/2" M27-2 in nickel yesterday that was in that same very clean, 95% range. He wanted 1500 bucks (no box or papers). That's big money. Your 8-3/8" blue gun, while not as desirable is still well worth $ 475. As some here have said, it'd be an easy flip if you wanted.

Kinda sorta haven't been home to post pics of the 27. Serial is N 1996XX. Can I get a born date on the darn thing? The fellow gave me a couple extra sights he said were for it..Front sight is pinned. Darn this thing is LLoonnggg!Smooth target grips. When Smith made these they did a beautiful job on 'em.. Love the checkering on the top strap..even the top of the sight base is checkered. Pics in the morning.

Well The fellow called me this morning. He seems to have a Model 14 he wants to sell. And I have a Marlin(not a Remlin) 336 he just has to have..so I am gonna be the proud owner of a Model 14 tomorrow. Will post pics of the 27 later. The guy that owned it shot a few 38s in it. Need to clean the cylinder. hasn't been shot since 1982. BTW is a S&W 14 worth 400 bucks?? It's nice but not like new. I saw it a few weeks ago..shot it even.

Pics are being posted in another thread in a few minutes. I am not a professional pitcher taker by any means.

Bought the same gun (27-2 83/8) at a small show last August - was $650, but talked seller down to $550 - mint in presentation case, sans papers and tools. While standing at the table, and before taking possession, another guy offered me $850. Told him no, I needed $900. We settled at $875. Should have seen the look on the original seller's face. A little awkward, but what's a guy to do? Whole transaction took less than a minute. :D

From the same seller/transaction, I also snagged a 99% 27-2 6" in 99% for $550 and a 99% 25-2 6.5" with 250 rds of 45acp rimmed for $600.

I kinda did the same type of thing at a gun show. Bought a like new Ruger Blackhawk 41 mag..1000s digit serial and sold it 3 minutes later..made 250 bucks.. You did good though. the others are great buys. I took a friend who is legally blind to a tiny gun show and he got me a table for my reloading stuff. Guy walked in and had 2 guns. 94 Win 45 Colt and a Smith in a sock. Turned out to be a model of 1950 45 Colt target. I bought it..for 375 bucks. His asking price.

Around 1973 or so. I have a 5" barrel 27-2 with a serial of N169XXX and according to the SCSW, the N1XXXXXX were 1973. And I bought my 27-2 new in April of 1974.
