There is a M-58 on the local armslist for $700. I spoke with the owner and he states its around 95 %.The photos are poor, and hard to tell, but a ftf will give me the chance to throughly inspect it.
Whats the opinion of you expert gents?
Is 700 a fair price?

If it is a 58 "no dash" without the lock,I would say it is a buy.If it is one of the older "S" Prefix serial number guns it is a steal.I would meet with him and offer $650 CASH.

I wish I could say that $700.00 was too high but it is not. Faint turn ring, slight loss of bluing around the end of the barrel, side plate never removed...it would be a good buy in today's standards. jb

58's seem to have really jumped in price over the last couple years especially when you add in the latest frenzy. I doubt you will find a nice one for much less than the $700. I have been kind of looking for a nickle 58 to go with my nickle 57 and prices (and looming taxes) have led me to delay a purchase.

One thing not mentioned is the grips...are they the original PC Magnas with the rounded bottom edges serial numbered to the gun... If they are then $700 would be an excellent price for one in 95% condition.

dilemma

Now I have found another .41 mag .
So heres my situation:
I know of a NOS M=57 4 inch P&R blue available for $950
the M-58 for $700
I cant buy both at this time, which one do I buy???
I havn`t seen either one yet, but there is no need meeting with the m-58 seller if I go for the m-57.

Help me boys help me...

Decent Model 58's are fewer & far between. Lotso 57's out there. Buy the 58 then start saving & looking for a nice 57 to go with it. $700 for a nice 58 is a deal. For a really nice one it's a screaming deal! Now go get it. :D

Get the model 58 @ $700....that's a good price and they are much harder to find than model 57's. Take a close look at my avatar....that's a model 58 on my desk and I've never found another I could afford.

M-58

Well I bought it.
It was very dirty and had fine pitting and rust on the front and back of the grips,as well as rust on top of the barrel, and wrong peeling finish stocks and a gunky barrel.
It locked up like a bank vault and on close inspection looks as if it has been barely shot-maybe less than one box.
I got right to work on it as soon as I got home. A bit of #0000 oil soaked steel wool , lots of Hoppes on a bronze brush and some elbow grease, and a coat of ren wax .
Here`s the result.
By the way ser # is n2342xx anyone care to tell me dob?
The Schipperke likes it too.

By the way it cleaned up so good I am tempted to go give the seller another hundred bucks!!
I did call him after the sale and asked if he was still happy with the price and he was-God Bless Him!!!

58's

Never met a M-58 I didn't like......I carried one as a duty gun for several years back when I was a motor cop for a large state police dept. in the South West.....that was back in the late 70's and early 80's.....still have that revolver and still carry it concealed now that I have hung up my spurs.....also have a NIB 58 salted away.....I have always like the fixed sight guns for duty and carry guns.....I have run several thousands of handloads thru my carry 58 over the years and they are great guns.....enjoy yours....good shooting. Welcome to the "58 club".

I just learned the value of fixed sights last week when I dropped my 657 right on the left side of the rear sight blade onto a concrete floor. Squashed it almost flat!!!

Aloha,

Dropping a gun on any hard surface makes me want to cry.

At least the rear sight is removable and can be repaired or changed.

May be a good thing, otherwise your gun might have suffered permant

noticeable damage.

That is a really nice looking Model 58.
I just bought one in nickel last week for $650.
It has target grips on it, so I am looking for the correct service grips.

Yogi,
your right the sight blade acted like a shock absorber/crush zone, anyway no real harm done, but a lesson learned.
