M&P 10 training

The Marine Corps taught me everything I needed to know about the M 14 and for that reason I have 3 of them. But now I have 2 M&P 10s and don't know the first thing about disassembly/assembly, cleaning and lubricating them. The fact that out of the box they both have multiple problems-- I guess I better learn before I refer to them as a piece of junk!

Is there some instructional material such as a DVD, or more complete manual that I can get?

They are basically just like a M-16.

Go to youtube and check out any AR15/M16 informational videos and you should be good to go.
They also make what we used to call "mickey Mouse" pads, it is a cleaning mat / cloth that has all the parts outlined so when you take apart the rifle you match the outlined part to the physical part and it gave you the name and all that jazz.

Just like how they trained you with the M14, repetition, muscle memory, now just on the m16 platform.

you may also want to check with local groups. in mass Gun Owners' Action League - GOAL.org - "Protecting Your Freedom Begins Here" has classes on the 'modern sporting rifle' that usually covers ar-15 stuff that would also mostly apply to m&p-10. any decent gun store should be able to point you to someone who can go over the basics also. the biggest things to get started with brand new ones are first to get all that factory gunk out of it (took me about 2 hours with common cleaning stuff). then get some decent ammo, check the messages on here about Ammunition for some notes, there are some that the m&p-10 doesn't like such as the CBC stuff. Some users think it is picky about magazines, here in mass i don't have much choice but haven't had trouble with ASC 10 round mags. Then shoot it a bit to get it moving good. Be careful about changing the buffer tube/spring/buffer, there is some excellent stuff in another thread here about that, you have to get the right combination or you could have lots of feed problems or maybe damage the lower receiver.

You are correct sir, the M&P 10 is basically just bigger and badder than the smaller m16 platform.

What problems are you having with them R/E the "junk" phrase? Just curious. I have an Armalite AR-10t (7.62) and like has been said, basic dis assembly is virtually the same as an AR-15.

I know what you are saying about the M-14. I have a M1a N.M., and its is one of my favorite rifles. The Armalite is just as accurate, but the M1a just feels better..

I think Walt Kulek's book on ARs would suffice. I 've handled a couple of the M&P 10s and other than the size of the parts I don't see any appreciable differences. The word is that the hammer and trigger group are the same as the 5.56 rifles; a good thing. So I wouldn't worry much about it.

Iron sights are a thing of the past for me. This new Smith and an optic might put me back into .30 calibers again. If Magpuls start flowing again I will probably spring for one.

Every time my "betters" tell me why I shouldn't own something like this just increases the odds I will.

See above, it was the ammo! Like them a bunch now but don't expect to use surplus 7.62! Others may be a problem but I can assure you that American Eagle works just fine

Glad to hear you found it to be only an ammo issue! I can't believe how many times I've read about other guys paying $1500 for a rifle then complaining when it won't function well or shoot sub MOA with cheap steel cased bi-metal FMJ Hungarian ammo. I say, man, would you feed your best Labrador retriever the cheapest low grade dog food you can buy, & then complain when he can't hunt the pheasants 'cause he's too busy with the sh--s. (By the way, studies have shown that shooting bi-metal bullets can reduce barrel life by over 50%.) Our M&P10 barrels have a proprietary barrel nut. Thus, to replace a worn out one, we're going to have to buy it from S&W. Not sure, but me thinks it's Not going to be cheap.)
