M&P 10mm: Am I ready to be hurt again? *UPDATE w/VIDEO: Mag drop problem persists*

I haven't posted in awhile, but you may remember me from this whole ordeal:
S&W M&P 10mm Pistols: Prevalence of the Magazine Drop Malfunction | by Mark | Medium

Anyway, it's been a couple of years. I'm considering giving the M&P 10mm another shot. I'm thinking (hoping) S&W has addressed the magazine drop issue, as I haven't seen it pop up in online discussions lately.

But before I pull the trigger on another M&P 10mm: have you heard of other folks experiencing the mag drop problem with recently-purchased M&P 10mm pistols? I'm just trying to determine if it's time to give S&W another chance.

I have the model 13388.
I have put just under 1000 rounds through it.
No malfunction of any kind.

It has one of the better triggers I have experienced on a striker fired gun.

I think any/every new S&W is as much a risk as they ever have been in the entire history of their production. Yes, I understand some folks from the 1970's and 1980's would argue with me and that's fine.

Today's S&W has phenomenal designs, horrible assembly that seems to be done by unskilled labor and their QC has been outsourced to the end buyer.

Even still, maybe you get a good one. I will certainly be waiting to hear your report. I have maintained a very tumultuous relationship with S&W and the 10mm Auto cartridge. I would LOVE to expound on that but this probably isn't the right conversation for it.

Good luck, report back.

Get ya self a S&W 1006.........It will still be running when your dead....

Well, I wanted one of these pretty bad and their price was right too. I held one at a LGS and I was real close to buying it but what really turned me away from the gamble was the way S&W was handing the problems.

So I ended up with another Sig, an Xten comp. It wasn’t without its reported problems too but I’m not shooting 200+ hardcast slugs out of mine so I have not experienced any issues . I guess I’m glad it worked out the way it did because the Xten is a really good pistol. My grip was that I had to buy suppressor high sights and have them put them on because the slide is too wide for Sig branded sight tools. If it comes optics ready then it should come with suppressor high sights.

UPDATE: I have indeed been hurt again! This is my third M&P 10mm pistol, exact same mag drop problem that I experienced with the first two. Here's the video:

And before anyone starts making excuses for S&W, see the link below. This a real problem that tons of people have experienced. I'm not bashing on S&W, they make my favorite pistols. But it's evident that they still have not addressed the 10mm mag drop issue.

I've never fixed my mag drop problem when firing DoubleTap 200 grain Hard Cast rounds with the wide flat bullet.

Every other round works fine, except my son in law had ONE mag drop with firing 180 grain JHP S&B rounds before I did any mods to the pistol.

I've updated my extractor to an Apex, updated my magazine springs, and tried every main spring from 20, 22, 24 Lb, and it still won't fire the DoubleTap 200 grain hard cast cartridges with the wide flat bullet.
The MODS have improved it though to a degree before it drops the mag.

Have you tried any other 200 grain hard cast rounds? Did it do ok with those?

If I remember right the magazine latch hole could be hit by certain shaped bullets and push the mag release button out. That's a design flaw with the magazine but you should be able to try rounds in the magazine and make sure they don't protrude into that hole. I haven't fired 200 grain Underwood Hardcast or any other ammo that costs a buck fifty per round but every thing I've fired has been 100 percent in my two year old 4" M&P.

Will those modifications work on the Performance Center 5.6 Inch model? I am looking to get a new recoil spring and guide rod

I believe we determined it is a simple fix, they just have to change the mag. Need to extend the guide portion of the mag where it tapers in about 1/4" lower so the bullets clear the mag catch. They have it that way on the 45 mags I believe. Someone needs to get a hold of their engineers and explain it to them. It can clearly be demonstrated with a mag and a wide nose bullet.

Rosewood

It's wild to me that they haven't fixed it yet:
1. One of the most common -- if not *the* most common -- reasons why people want 10mm pistols is for predator defense.
2. One of the most common -- if not *the* most common -- rounds for that purpose is flat-nose hard cast at 200 or 220 grains.

Given #1 and #2, it's a big problem if a 10mm pistol chokes on 200 grain hard cast.
