Got a new 15-22 after reading nothing but good about it. First time at the range had what I think was to many failures but I put it off to needing break in. second trip I had failures to eject, had used shell & next round in the chamber at the same time, more stovepipes than I could count. then the ejector, pin & spring came out with the spring & pin stuck like a stovepipe by the bolt.
Now after knowing what to look for I have read about a few failures but none like this. Has anyone seen or heard of this ?
I have sent the gun back to S&W I hear they have good C S.
My question is has there been any reports of the repaired weapon failing again.
,
Newbie here, I read a lot of post here & got some good info, wish I had look this up before I got this 15-22 I would have spent a little more & got the MOE. I will have more questions about things I can add after I get it back & run about 1000 rounds through it.
,
I have some pics. of the failure but don't see how to post them.
,
Thanks for reading this if you do & thanks for all the other post.

I have to say, I've never heard of such a catastrophic failure on any gun from a major manufacturer! Though as with any product of mass production, the possibility of a perfect-storm of faulty parts and poor workmanship always exists. I've seen an increase in the incidence of operational problems with normally very reliable and high-quality production firearms on several of the forums I belong to and the general consensus is that in trying to keep up with the Obama-fueled demand for guns, manufacturers are accidentally letting more lemons get through their quality control checkpoints. S&W has a great reputation for customer service so don't lose your faith in your gun just yet; too many of us have had these things perform wonderfully to think it as anything more than an anomaly. Good luck.

mine had the same stovepipe/ejecting issues but without the parts coming out.

i contacted s&w on a thursday, had my shipping label by the next day, shipped the rifle out on the following monday and 8 days later i got the gun back. it has ran flawlessy since coming back

Thanks, I have S&W hand guns & they are the reason this is the 22 I got.

Thanks for responding, when I called to get the shipping label they told me it would be 2 weeks I sent it off 5/28 so maybe soon.
Can I ask how much have you shot it after getting it back ?

you are very welcome...
i'm up to about 300-400 rounds so far...i've had only two fte's since...one near the end of the first mag shot after return, the second was in the subsequent mag., again near the end(both within the last 5 rounds) i did not, nor have i payed attention to staggering since it has returned. i did not re-clean it or re-lube it after return either. i have even had no issues in a plinker tactical 35 round magazine that i have read not so good things about....

i shipped it 5-6 and picked it up at fed ex on 5-14. i was told 2-3 weeks also.

All of the non-performance center models use the same internal parts, to the best of my knowledge. Upgrading to the MOE would only have bought you better accessories, with no internal upgrades.

As photoracer asked, what ammo, also did you thoroughly clean and lightly lube the bolt rails before shooting it?

I recommend running a few boxes of CCI Mini Mags through a new rifle, and after S&W fix it and return it I would try that to verify everything is working right.

Having the ejector pop out was most likely caused by the other issues, which are often related to the ammo used.

I want to thank all y'all for the fast responses & thank you for the in put.
I would surly like to start it off with some CCI , if you know where I can get some please let me know.
The day I got the rifle I unboxed it & shot 100 rounds of what ever the range was selling.
they sell it 50 in a brown envelope & I did not even look it see what it was cause I did not have a clue the 15-22 would be sensitive to what kind of ammo. This was when I had few hang up more than I would like, but.
At home I had a box of Remington golden bullet 36 grain H.P. that I had seen & picked up for a friend.
Shot a few out back with no problem.
I finally found a little at W M, Federal 40 grain solid, said on the box it was for semi-autos. These are what I took with me the day it broke. Ran no more than three mags of this before it failed.
Now I have read both that you can run anything through it & not to use this or that.
Not sure I want to keep a weapon that is ammo finicky. I know 22 semi-autos & the ammo are prone to miss fire now & then, but I need to be able to clear it & keep shooting. If it will not work with WM bulk ammo then you will see it here for sale or I will just keep breaking it & sending it back : )

Before you start all the moaning and groaning, why not wait until the rifle comes back and you put some ammo through it. Instead of a hundred rounds of this and a hundred rounds of that, pick ONE ammo and try it for a few hundred rounds.

so far in the few hundred rounds i have sent through mine since getting it back...i have had a mag a walmart federal bulk, winchester wildcats, remington thunderbolts, cci blazers and something else...i basically tried everything i had. like i said, only 2 failure to ejects in the first 50 rounds...

Could you possibly have had one with the old long firing pin? That used to cause OOB firing, blowing out the ejector.

Well 2 weeks yesterday that I left my 15-22 at gun store / range I use that was good enough to say they would send it off for cause I am such a good customer. So I call to see whats up I did not think it would take the whole 2 weeks after hearing from some of you that got yours back in 8 days.
Someone sat my gun in the back & for got to see ship it. It was still there. I said #*;:=#<>< & (((((( ? They could not apologize enough.
But that did not help me at all, so I said just give it to me only to find out I could ship it but not have come back to me.
To end this they gave me some range passes , a mag & promised to ship it first thing tomorrow.
? What would you have done ?

Sorry to hear of your problems. That blows.

People make mistakes. Nice to hear they attempted to make amends. A couple range passes and a mag would be worth about $75 in my world, fwiw.

am i understanding you correctly that the range forgot to ship it? if that is the case, why did you not get a fed ex label from S&W and ship it fed ex?

that is what i would have done..well, that is what i did...

the mag is a bonus...

did you call s&w first to see why they were taking so long, then find out the range did not ship it?

Not a S&W mag. but one I was looking at a 'plinker tactical' 35 rd. $27 & 3 passes $12 each.
It's a fairly new range & gun shop. We were among their first customers they have always been welcoming even to folks new to range shooting like us, quick to offer help & give shooting tips. I think their prices are fair the wife bought a M&P9c for $484 so then I went back & got this 15-22 for $430.

Was the store trying to tell you that an FFL must be involved in this warranty process?
Unless there are some state restrictions on shipping firearms that apply to you, of course you can have it come back to you. I've had to send my 15-22 back to S&W three times, and all three times they emailed me a shipping label and I dropped it off at the FedEx store, and they shipped it back to me.

As I said the gun broke there, I asked how do you go about shipping a gun, they said call S&W get the label & we will ship it for you, I said great thanks. S&W said it would be 2 weeks I marked the date hoping it would be that long, it was 2weeks when I called the range had no reason to think this is what I would hear. Now looking back I should have done a couple of things but if they were going to handle it I was going to let them. I will be tracking it this time.

That is what they said, I am in Georgia. Where are you & why did you need to send yours back 3 times.
& if you don't mind how old is it ? As soon as I started having problems with this one I started looking & seems most get them back & they run fine.

Man this has been like pulling teeth. But alls well that ends OK I guess.
The gun shop I have been having problems with told me they would give me a new 15-22 in place of the one it seems they can now not find.
Problem is they only had one's without flash suppressor or the camo w/ 10 rd. mag.
I got the camo, a bird in the hand thing, not really what I wanted, but.
? how does this polymer take to painting ?

& let me add this one ran smooth as butter :) now.

My strange 15-22 saga continues.

Had the failure like no other I have heard of. No prob. send it back after all it is a S&W.
Place where I bought it says not to worry they will handle it for me, then they say they put the rifle in the back & forgot to ship it for 2 weeks. They gave me some free stuff & said they would make sure it went out next morning & text me tracking info, the tracking number I got from them would not work. After a text from me asking that the heck was going on the manger called to say they would give me a new gun & they would worry about that one. OK I say I am on my way to get it. I take a box of ammo & head out.
Realtree camo was not my first pick, it was there when I got mine, but I did not want one without flash suppressor. So I got the camo ran 300 rounds I have to say it did grow on me & it ran smooth. I went home feeling a lot better.
Second time I went to shoot it I had the empty cartage eject down into the lower receiver & block the hammer. I guess that is very odd but at this point I am saying OK what next, well.
,
Well it turns out you were right CrazyFingers Because I got a call today from Fedex saying my rifle will be delivered to my home tomorrow. The long lost first 15-22 is finding its way home.
,
So what y'all think I should do ?

i would contact the dealer that gave you the 2nd rifle and return it to them. i'm sure they would like to sell it at a lower used price instead of taking a complete loss on it...if i had the available scratch, i'd be happy to pick it up for near new price(my wife recently shot mine and asked when i am buying her one!)

That camo one is harder to find, and might get more resale value if you work something out where you get to keep it.

To be fair, I'd offer to pay the shop what the shop paid for the real-tree since they seem to be treating you really well.

I'd have to run out to the money tree tho and do some pickin.

Wish my gun shop had their attitude.

What goes around, comes around........

Yes they are good guys , don't know who dropped the ball , or in this case my gun in the back & forgot about it. But they are trying to make it right.
& & it's not like I could just keep both , could I , I mean could I

You ever heard of the Golden Rule? I think you are joking, but still...

It is not a matter of what you could do but what you should do.
