M&P 15-22 goes boom...not good

Ditto for me. I had the same thing happen to me with winchester ammo. Nothing but federal for us in our 1522s.

same thing happened to me as OP

was out firing this past weekend and had the same thing happen, nobody was injured at all, and i am new to this rifle but have fired many M16A2's and M4's while in the Army, think it was OOB firing, casing stuck in chamber, so i dropped mag and broke rifle down to pull bolt out and then get casing out, however when i pulled the bolt out i had a small spring and pin fall onto the table i was working on, called S&W Monday still awaiting shipping label to send rifle in. i have no idea where the pin or bolt came out of on the bolt or some where in the upper reciever but think it was from bolt, also no idea if something else came off that i didn't see or find if it hit the table and rolled or fell off into the grass. guess we will see what S&W tells me. Just bought the rifle in Aug 12', seriel number starts with a DTZ, if that means anything to you all. if anyone on here has any idea please let me know.

Are your take down pins still attached to the lower? Did you
take your grip off?

yes the take down pins are still attached to lwer, i did take the pistol grip off in preperation to send it back in and put the stock pistol grip back on it, both the springs were still in there.

yeh thats what i figured,, i am just hoping they figure out what happened to it and fix it, that would be more important to me, i don't get a chance to shoot very often anyways becuase of work schedule. did you return yours for the same reason? hope you get it back soon.:(

Jeff64,

Do you know and can you identify for US... what brand and load of ammo you were using at the time of the OOB detonation.?????

Thanks,
Paul

It was Remington 22 thunderbolt, bought as bulk but the were in smaller 50 round packs inside larger box, 40 grain lead round nose, velocity 1256 at muzzle. I had shot approx 175 rounds of this prior to it happening.

I also had an OOB. S&W repaired, Nooo problems

I purchased my second M&P 15-22 on 22 Dec 2012. Was shooting Winchester 36 grain when the OOB ocurred which blew the extractor out. Sent the rifle back to S&W and they fixed it without question. :D

FYI. Photos below of the cartridge and the bolt (extractorless).

Mike,
Thanks for the reminder, I have seen this ammo correlate to several other OOB detonations... this is going to be one ammo I am going to definitely stay away from using.!!!!

Glad to hear you got your rifle back.!!!

Yeah, I'm a bit hesitant to finish the Winchester ammo

What's really interesting about this whole OOB issue are the discussion points that the occurances are common (although not frequent)
  • to .22 Semi's,
  • ensuring bolt and chamber faces and chamber are clean
  • to the FCG-Bolt closure/action of the M&P 15-22
  • related to poor quality/dirty ammo
  • a combination of all the above

I am a bit preplexed when I look at all the possible factors. Still, I am very hesitant to use/finish the same brick of Winchester ammo. That brick will more than likely be used up with my pistol, or I'll only do very controlled, slow fire with the 15-22.

Smith and Wesson did me good however. They got me all fixed up. Kudos to them!

I got my 15-22 yesterday evening, no chance to shoot yet, but browsing through the manual saw a list of ammo they do not recommend...don't specifically remember what was on it, and it's not in front of me but I'm wondering if some of the ammo mentioned in this thread is on that list?..

FWIW, that list dates from the introduction of the 15-22 and may well be outdated and no longer reflective of today's ammo quality. The changes over the past few months in Remington's products is proof of that.

IMHO, today that list, especially the "not recommended" list is useless. Try any ammo and see how it performs in YOUR rifle.

Good Point.

This is a copy from the manual. But I agree, try and see what works. I was shooting Winchester HV 36g, which isn't on the "not recommended" list. But Winchester Wildcats are.

You make a good point. I'm a lot more cautious though, and mindful.
