So I have been researching, and sparking up conversations with many people trying to decide what AR I want to go with. Every time I have someone say to get the Ruger I click a different link and people say go with the S&W. Now that the second gen comes with the FA and DC.

What is everyone's opinion? Obviously this is a Smith forum and I understand that but if you had to give your unbiased opinion what would you choose?

They both seem to offer the same bang for the buck. The Ruger has a different twist rate that some say is better for bullet stabilization; not sure how true that is though.

Personally I am leaning more towards the S&W just because all of my pistols are Smith's.

Sounds good, thanks for the link! My one buddy that owns a Ruger AR 556 says the 1/8 twist in his is superior to the Smith 1/9 but it seems like a lot of people say it won't be noticeable since I will most likely be shooting just 55gr and nothing much heavier.

1/9 is fine. I have/had/have a Sport and I, too, was trying to decide between that and the AR-556. I like the nitrided barrel on the Sport a lot better than just bluing as on the AR-556. I've got other reasons for choosing the Sport over the AR-556, but I'll just say this. I did a LOT of research between the two. I don't just throw money away, so before I buy something I research the heck out of it.

Can we sticky one of the 100 threads that go over this question so we don't see it every other day, lol?

You can try but history shows people still will create a new post. Happens on every forum regardless of the subject matter.

My buddy has the Ruger, I rented the S&W and we both traded off and on between guns. Shot maybe 250 through each rifle. My buddy now sold his Ruger and bought a S&W. He liked the Ruger s lot but just liked the S&W more. He felt more comfortable with the Sport. I liked both but since my handguns are Smiths I'm gonna get the Sport.

If your buddy is not shooting anything heavier (longer really) than 69gr rounds, any improved ability of the 1:8 twist is lost. Then you add in the fact that the Ruger barrel is not lined or treated, and the Smith barrel is nitrided barrel...

I was torn between the two and it came down to price. I was able to buy the Sport, on sale, for $499 plus fees. Now that I've also had the opportunity to shoot the Ruger too, I'm very happy with my choice. Both companies are large manufacturers that stand behind their products, you can't go wrong either way.

I had the same delema.......... so I bought 1 of each!

Chose the Sport II over the Ruger primarily because of the detailed numerous QC issues over on rugerforum.net. Not to say Ruger doesn't make a quality product (I love my 30-06...), it just seemed like way more reported issues than there should be for a mil-spec rifle IMO. Didn't want to chance it.
