I don't know about the 15/22 but if it's like the Colt 22 made buy Uramex/Walther there's a liner that's threaded & the flash suppresor tightens the barrel sleeve over the liner & also sets headspace..
I wouldn't try an cut it as posted above because of It becomeing a a short barreled AOW & would then require a $200 Tax Stamp..

This is just a suggestion, but if you do want to chop the barrel, then pick something worth chopping on, not an M&P 22.....and I don't mean that to say the M&P is not a good gun, what I mean is that you can't shoot anything out of that gun other than .22's, if you want a shorty buy an AR and then register it, chop it and you can shoot all kinds of stuff out of it....6.8, 7.62, 5.56, .22, 9mm....the list goes on. So from a financial standpoint, thats a poor choice to chop.

check with BATF first, rifle with barrel under 16 inch is a Short Barreled Rifle, registration and tax required.
i am dissabled amd wanting just alittleweight off the end of the gun. i know keltec sells a 223 ar pistol that is under 16 " ithought some off the car 15's were under 16" are you sure about the length?

are you sure about the length i really need alittle weight off the nose of the gun ? ialready removed the sights .

Read this straight from the NFA rule book:

2.1.3 Rifle. A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder and designed to use the energy of an explosive in a fixed cartridge to fire only a single projectile through a rifled barrel for each single pull of the trigger. A rifle subject to the NFA has a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length.

Cutting off a few inches of that barrel will only dissapoint you in the very small amount of weight removed, if making the rifle lighter is your intention.

If you still want to cut your barrel, you must FIRST file in duplicate an ATF form 1 with print cards, pictures and LEO sign off, along with the $200 tax. Upon return of the approved form 1 - you are good to go.

Do not, what ever you do, shorten or cut the barrel on you rifle to less than 16" until you have an approved form 1.

The process to get an approved form 1 takes several months. and it is a federal offense to cut the barrel before you get the tax stamp on the completed and approved form 1.
