M&P 22 arrived

Is it possible to take off both safeties and make it like a "no thumb safety" M&P, even though the part is set up a bit differently?

There is nothing inside the M&P22 that is the same as any of the others. As far as totally removing the safety assembly, not sure didn't disassemble that far. I wasn't concerned about totally removing it, just the lever from the left side ( had planned on just cutting the left side lever off), I'm a right handed shooter. But from what I did see though, probably not, but I'm not a gunsmith.

M & P 22 pistol

Smith & Wesson lists the frame materal as metal, but they do not specify what kind of metal. Is is a qualtity steel frame or pot metal?? Will a magnet stick to it? I have a 9 MM M & P compact and I really like it.

Do you mean the slide? It's aluminum. The frame is polymer with a metal slide guides-rails(looks like steel, taking it to the range again tommarrow, will see if a magnet sticks to it then and post). If you remove the 2 roll pins from the frame, everything comes out of the frame as a unit, the slide guide-rails, trigger assy., etc. Hope that helps.

D.O.A.F.S, when you took yours completely apart did you find it all mucked up with grease/oil? I am still getting grease showing up in spots I did not grease after giving it a thorough cleaning. I am wondering if I should pull mine apart and get more stuff out.
If I shoot the whole thing with gun-scrubber will the polymer be OK?

Yeh, mine had a good bit of grease on it as well mainly in the guide rod area in the frame. When I tore it apart to do the safety and site mods I cleaned the thing real good, I use Gunzilla, it's safe on the polymer parts. I just disassemble, spray everything down good, take an old tooth brush to it, then use my air compressor to blow eveything off, run some patches through the bore, done. I've had no lead fauling like some, but I'm shooting the copper plated stuff, whether that makes a big difference or not, don't know. When I reasemble I just oil where the manual says and use no grease. With what I shot yesterday, I have over 2000 rounds through it, and can count on 1 hand the rounds that didn't go bang. So far, I'll be honest it's preformed better then I expected. At this point unless I'd start to have problems, if a conversion would come available I probable woundn't buy it, I'm that happy with it.

I picked up mine tonight… let's just say the grin is BIG!

I put 200 flawless CCI min-mag rounds in it tonight. It's so sweet, and very accurate… it's very close in grip as my M&P Pro 9mm full size. For sure this is a home run for Smith & Wesson.

A few observations, the sights are pretty good; the trigger takes a bit of getting used too. As a few others have mentioned WAY too much grease and needs a good cleaning… Still 200 rounds and it worked absolutely flawlessly.

Several of the LGS folks popped into the range slot, took a few shots and all said the same thing… Glock needs something like this…

One other comment about the safety, I'm tempted to remove it… and it is not as smooth as my 1911's… I think I'll wait till I've run a few thousand rounds before I remove it… need to see how the wife takes to it.

Folks, if you are looking for a new 22lr, this is the one. S&W hit a home run!

I must admit, I love shooting, but man, this is going to be tons of fun…

Sweet. Thanks for the comparison pics too. I hope to add a .40 FS to my safe soon so it is nice to know they are pretty equal in size and fit.

10 Minutes Later: Well I just posted this and decided to checks Buds since I was thinking about the FS .40 and it was in stock. Purchase made.

Put another 150 rounds through it today and the lead fouling was present again. I caught it early and stopped shooting before it got really bad. CCI Blazer ammo again.
Lots of lead in the throat and center of the barrel but it came out with a bronze brush, M-7 Pro cleaner and some elbow grease.
Next step is gonna be to try different ammo. Not sure why mine is fouling so much.

One thing about any 22lr ammo, it is lead bullets, and all of it is externally lubricated, and that means DIRTY. I have yet to find anything .22 that doesn't lead up after a few rounds. Keep it clean, use the bronze barrel brush once in a while with some good old Hoppe's and have a ball shooting a buttload of ammo.

I love my M&P22. I also have the Sig Sauer Mosquito .22 and so far, the M&P has run a lot better overall. The Mosquito started FTL after less than 50 rounds. So far, no problems with the M&P.

I tried and could not shoot the CCI Blazers through mine, they would not load in the chamber. I had about 5 or 6 not to load out of 50.

I tried my PMC Sidewinder ammo and out of 300 rounds, had 1 stove pipe.

I also tried some Remington Gold, not sure which ones I had, and they shot well to.

Very accurate and nice shooting gun. I like mine.

I'm curious to see how this .22 shoots for you guys after some time passes.

A while back I wanted some less expensive range times so I bought a new Mosquito. It liked some ammo, but it didn't like a lot of ammo. I was disappointed. I bought a Charter Arms Pathfinder because I didn't want to deal with the single-six type loading and ejection process.

I would still like a semi auto .22, but looking at the picture someone posted of the internals of the M&P it looks just like the Sig. I'm wondering if it's going to be hit or miss.

Got a brick or Remington Gold, 36g plated hollow point. Went out and shot 100 rounds with good results.

I had about 25 left overs of Winchesters that I tried with good results.

This might be the wrong thread to post in, but I didn't want to start a new one with my single piece of info.

I emailed S&W yesterday before joining this forum asking a few questions about the M&P22, esp. about the lack of interchangeable backstraps, and here's the reply I received:

"As far as backstraps it will have everything the other models carry"

I take this to mean "everything the centerfire M&P pistols carry", that is, interchangeable backstraps. However, it seems that the actual pistols people have gotten their hands on lack this feature. Maybe a newer model will have them? The guy did use future tense in that sentence....

They might make that change at some point in the future as you suggest, however the current M&P22 does not have the interchangeable backstraps.

I read somewhere early on that S&W had said that the .22 would NOT have the interchangeable back straps as a cost cutting measure-which is fine with me. I have had a couple of incidents when I spoke to their CS people when they were not as up to date on parts or other things as their reps or armorer instructors were. They are probably supposed to keep up with ALL products in the company line, a tough task and training takes them away from the phones-which is where they are needed. Sometimes the best place to get S&W info is right here on this forum-tons of experience and contacts all in one place.
