I bought the .22 Compact. Don't have / have not fired the standard. It was a snap decision after seeing it at a gun counter.
I am at 4500 rounds, have a need to change the recoil spring, and it won't shoot standard Federal bulk (which I can't get anyway). Beyond that, no complaints. If it fell apart, I would buy another.

Been following info on the compact since it came out as i thought it would be good for my wife to learn on as well so she has her own 22 but one i would enjoy as a compliment to my buckmark. Near all comments have been very positive on the compact and appears it is not as finicky on ammo. Would be curious to hear what those who own both would say for comparisons

I grabbed a 22 compact, Grant of G&R (posts here on occasion) reported the compact is a nicer gun, good enough for me. Haven't shot it yet but it's a perfect size for a plinker .22, glad I bought it.

You mentioned using it as a training pistol. If you already have a full size m&p then go full size or if you have a shield I'd go compact. My m&p22 fs is a fun pistol, but after holding a compact at the lgs the other day i have a feeling it to will be joining our family soon. The m&p22 compact is 100% S&W American made,the full size is made by Walther in Germany. The back straps on the grip are not interchangeable, so if children/small hands are going to shoot it ,the compact may be a better fit.

I have both. They are both great shooters but the FS is a lot more picky on the ammo. The compact eats anything I throw at it. As red dragon said if you are using it for a training pistol and you have a FS get the FS 22. If you have a Shield the 22 compact is VERY close in size.

Compact it is a no brainer
Full size by Walther lacks in many areas and has a huge following of FTF FTE COMPLAINTS
Ruger SR22 with the plastic take down latch is even worse.
Sig Mosquito is even worse than the above.
BTDT Went with the Compact but the Ruger Mark 3 is by far the best gun in 22 lr today

Thanks for all the feedback. My wife has a -9c as her self defense pistol. I know the full size .22 has the same grip (without the interchangeable backstrap) as the regular M&P line, but the .22 compact is closer in overall size to the regular M&P compacts. What it might come down to is availablility when I decide to purchase. The regular .22 is hard to come by it seems.
I shot the full size in my CPL class and I liked it so much I decided to get one. They only had the compact in stock and that felt good in the hand and I had heard good things about it so I got that. I took it to the range this past Monday after cleaning and lube and put 100 rounds of CCI 40 grain mini-mags through it with one fail to load which I cleared by manually recycling the slide. Great shooter and more accurate than I am. I'm considering making this my EDC because I'm old and have a hard time racking the slide on my 5906 and I can hit what I point at with the compact.

I feel about the same with my Buckmark, not based on years of experience but with the wood grips it just feels "perfect" in my hand. As i figured another .22 would be added to the small but growing collection for me and the wife at the range, i think this new compact really fits the bill.
Well, i do already have a 2nd .22, that being an old Colt Challenger that still shoots great and was handed down to me as my first gun after my father in law passed.... but the wife has zero interest in handling it which i can understand.

I bought the regular M&P 22 last April for 13yr old daughter, and she loves it. Eats up every kind of .22 ammo I put in it, except the Winchester white box bulk stuff. If I had a choice it would be tough, I like the size and feel of the full size, but like all the upgrades of the compact.
This place has the compact for $275.00, and I believe a flat rate shipping of $7.00.

I own both pistols and believe the Compact to be better quality. S&W has dropped their association with Walther so I don't think Walther will be producing anymore FS M&P22s for Smith. If the demand is there I'm sure S&W will start producing the full size version as well. My full size has been flawless in function but I find the Compact to be more accurate and has a better trigger. I recommend the Compact unless of course S&W starts actually building the FS.

Both are very accurate. I shoot from 5 yds to 50 yds in my backyard range. I have the Shield 9mm for my EDC so I shoot the compact more often, but the FS is great too.

Magazines are not interchangeable, I have both pistols and the Compact is by far the better weapon in functioning reliability and handling ergonomics. Place the Compact in your hand and it fits like a pistol should-- mine is accurate, although not a target pistol, it is able to shoot small game soda cans or targets with equal ease. I am feeding mine with the oldest ammo on the shelf (30 years and more) and brands that have long ago disappeared --with complete reliability. I have a lot of .22 pistols and find the new a Compact to be among my very favorites.

Edit to add: Just kidding. The FS has served me well and has served a purpose, and still does, but the Compact is rapidly approaching the most enjoyed 22 pistol I own.

Mine came with 2.
S&W redesigned many aspects of the full size Walther (getting rid of the skinny pencil barrel was the best improvement IMO). Definitely go for the better designed Compact!

We have both and the only benefit I see in the compact is for smaller hands. Both my kids are in HS now and even my daughter prefers the FS. The full size has about 2000 rds through it and we put a Hi Viz FSP on it and let it run. I can only suggest properly cleaning and lubricating and they both work fine on every type of ammo I can buy. Yes, even Rem Buckets!

The magazine is about $32.00 without shipping from what I see online. So if they are pulling the second magazine that is how they are advertising it for that price.
Some of the first posts I saw about the compact mentioned that they only got one mag. I wonder if it was a promo / early release package, or if the store just pulled the extras.
Mine came with two, and was one of the first two received by the GM where I bought it. Yes, paid too much, but had some store credit to burn, and no one else had them on the shelf.
