I ended up getting a NL 442 Pro for now, but ultimately I would like a scandium J-frame in .327 federal magnum. I also like the sights a lot from the M&P series. I was wondering the possibility of a conversion of an M&P 340 to .327 federal magnum...

I was thinking the cylinder, barrel liner, and some of the internal action can be swapped in either from new parts and/or a donor revolver. I remember looking into this a few weeks back and I think I found the cylinder lengths to be a close match if not the same.

Anyone know any reasons this cannot be done?

Are the barrel liners made to be replaceable?

If a donor revolver is used, the spares from the M&P can be used to convert the donor to .357 magnum, which I was thinking of gifting to a family member or something, as the barrel markings may indicate the incorrect caliber making it more difficult to sell off.

Unless of course S&W has plans of releasing a .327 federal magnum M&P J-frame that someone knows about, then I'll just wait for that, but I have a feeling the M&P series revolvers will be sticking to .357/.38 for awhile...

I would recommend at looking at the model 632 that is available now or wait for the next 632, hammerless, two inch barrel, and no lock. It is supposed to hit the streets this summer. It is confusing that they used the same model number to describe two different configurations.

That was actually the donor I was thinking of. The only thing about that new 632 Pro is that it's still a stainless steel frame and not a scandium frame, hence the swap idea. The sights are intriguing though. If I do a swap, the donor 632 Pro will end up essentially as a two-tone 640 Pro w/o moonclip capability. And no locks on either resulting revolver. :)
