M&P 40/9 Conversion

Just got in my 9mm fullsize M&P barrel for my M&P40 today...Compared all "OD' dimensions with the 9 and 40 barrels, then seated the 9 brl into the slide and reassembled the pistol...then loaded a 40/357 mag with a mixture of 9mm 125 Golden sabre, 124 Tap critical defense, and CCI aluminum blaser 115 tmj. Manually cycled the action all the way through with no problems at all. Took it to my farm range and proceeded to empty 15 rd.s I had in the magazine at 8" inch steels @ 15 yds. All hits, no problems. Took it back in, did breakdown and searched for anything wrong...No problems, no gliches...Looks like I have a 3 caliber (40/357sig/9mm) M&P now. Thanks MidwayUSA for the factory S&W M&P barrel at a great price...!!!

I personally recommend getting the appropriate 9mm magazine it will make it even more reliable :D but for just range use the 40 mags will do

The 40 mags should work to feed the 9mm cartridges. The difference is the feed lips may be a tad too wide. If you have an extra mag, you might try to slightly reduce the width, between the lips. Just slightly squeezing the lip area with pliers, should do it. The amount to reduce the opening is only .005 to .008 of an inch, which is two to three hairs thickness. You should be able to find a width that will feed both the 9mm and 40 cartridges. It should only take just a small amount to narrow the lip width, to allow the mag to feed the 9mm cartridges properly, and also keep feeding the 40 cartridges per normal, for the 40 magazine. My Shield 40 magazine feeds both with no problems, including the last 9mm round in the mag.

No, that's for a Compact, like the title says. You need one for a Shield. The Compact barrel is .4" longer than the Shield.

I called Midway and the guy said they didn't list a 9mm barrel for the shield.
Anyone have the Midway part number?

Hi all, joined the forum just because of this thread.... I'm in the market for a 9mm and came across this and said thats awesome, a twofer...
anyway, before i commit to a 40, was wondering if the same thing will work with the new pro core series. specifically the 5 inch version. sku 178059, if so ill be all over it (if i can find one).

SUBJECT: Shield 40

Dear Customer,

We do not have a conversion barrel and do not recommend a conversion. To place a 9MM barrel in 40cal slide will damage the slide.

If further assistance is required please reply accordingly.

Sincerely,
Michael DiFiore

I would like to purchase a Shield 40 - 9 conversion barrel.

Thank you,

Could the opposite be true as well, 9mm to .40 in the FS and Compacts? They're built on a .40 frame and slide and all of the stock parts like the ejector, extractor, recoil spring assembly, mag catch, etc are the same for the 9/40/357.

No. My understanding is that you can go from larger-to-smaller, but not the other way around. Thus, .40 (or .357) to 9mm - NOT 9mm to .40 (or .357). I know of those who have claimed to have gone from smaller caliber to larger caliber, but I won't try it.

Dave

9 to 40 is not able to be done without shaving the sides of the barrel where it locks in place its only a few thousandths to thick but it can b done obviously not recommended but it really isn't changing much at all. I felt like a tard when I realized I could've bought the 40 and converted so I sold it with the quickness and bought the 40 and an extra barrel. You can sell your 9 and buy the 40 and a spare 9mm barrel. Or you could buy the 40 barrel if your one of those crazy SOBs and shave it down I've only heard of a few people doing it but there was no negative affect at all "supposedly" but its your hiney who will b pulling the trigger not mine.

FYI, Midway had S&W factory 9mm mags in stock a couple of weeks back for $35 each. No more last round FTF and lack of slide hold open after last shot while using the .40 mags to shoot 9mm. Don't know if they have any left now. If not, just keep checking back as they seem to have them in stock from time to time now.

Do you replace anything besides the barrel and the clip to go from .40 caliber to 9mm?

No problems here. Flawless operation. Got the barrel from Midway for about $70.

OOPS! Didn't realize this thread is three years old.

This thread is just too good to die! Anyone know if the newer style 9mm barrels as sold by midway will work with an older 2006 model FS M&P 40 pistols?

My biggest concern is.......What kind of accuracy are you guys getting using the factory 9mm barrels in the .40 guns?

I currently have an M&P 9mm full size and an M&P 40 full size with an extra .357 Signal barrel. Any GOOD reason to buy a 9mm barrel for the 40? If so, which barrel?
