I have an M&P 40 with a problem. When I slide home a magazine, the slide unlocks and closes. I am not touching the release button at all. I am wondering if it will start firing like that also. Any ideas? Thanks.

That is common with many full-size semiautomatic pistols. Your M&P has a firing pin lock that will prevent the pistol from firing unless the trigger is pressed, so it is not a problem.

In any event, keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction when chambering a round.

I know this is extreme thread resurrection, but I find that mine only does that when i press sortof rearward on the mag while pushing it up (so that the top of the mag pivots opposite toward the front more) and not when I slide it it any other way/angle. Hope this helps if you havent figured it out by now.

My M&P 9 and Glock 17 both do that. It is an advantage when speed reloading in competition. I have never had the gun fire accidentally. I find that it happens regularly when I forcefully insert the fresh Mag.

I carry/train with a M&P45. When the gun was new it didn't do that, but after a few hundred rounds and a couple of cleanings it started doing that. It only does it for me, when I'm in "battle speed" and is very handy for the re-loads, it saves a fraction of a second. It hasn't done it to me when I'm slide the magazine in nice and easy.

Never had a misfire due to this. I believe the fire pin lock will prevent this from happening.

I cannot imagine why it would. The gun does not know the difference between whether you let the slide go or not. It does not fire when you let the slide go forward, so I see no reason why it should if it goes forward on its own. The only thing happening is that the slide stop is becoming disengaged. That occurs every time you allow the slide to go forward. It does not in any way cause the firing pin safety to deactivate. My answer assumes you are not pulling the trigger.
