There is also a 5" Pro version. Unfortunately, a guy in my AR shooting club purchased a Pro, the blue box label identifies it as a Pro, but the pistol inside was an L.
I just read Bud's Gun Shop has the Pro Series for $599. Then there's the $30 reabate. New S&W for $570, not a bad deal in my opinion. I really like my M&P40 so it's gonna be tough deciding if I should keep it and get the 5" M&P or sell the M&P40 to fund the new gun.
I'm very tempted to order one. I shoot an M&P9 in IDPA SSP and prefer the ergos over brand G. The first thing I did to my gun was put a FO front sight on it and get a trigger job done, which is another $80 bucks I'd spend on the more stock M&P9L. Having a game gun ready to go for six bills is a very good deal - I could even shoot it in the NC state match in August. Hmmmm...I shouldn't have read this thread
Since my original post, I have obtained a M&P9L. I did not mention that I already had a M&P9 which I liked very much.
After close to 1000 rounds, I find that the Smith works better for me in every area than the similar Glock model than I was used to. The only issue left open is reliability, which can only be determined after thousands of rounds.
To address some questions I have seen on the forum, my opinion based on my two guns is that the Pro Series has a much better trigger than the standard M&P. This is most noticeable if you have the chance to shoot them both at a range session. The Pro seems to have a shorter reset and a cleaner break than the standard pistol.
I have the standard 9 and the standard 40. I have had a trigger job doen on the 40 which I shoot much better than the 9. I was hoping to get the new long slide hopeing the extra length would lend to a little better accuracy. From what I have read the trigger on the Pro is not much better if at all over the standard 9. Looks like a trigger job is going to be in order when I get my hands on one. My 9 trigger has improved some after thousands of rounds but still could use a job. Since I carry the 9 on my job as a duty weapon a trigger job for it is out of the question.
I guess that I will have to send mine off to Dan Burwell since all the Gunsmith's here in town act so weird about doing the work. I did not want to ship it off so I called and stopped by several gunsmiths in my area to ask.
I shot several mps this past week as sw hosted a field school for my dept. All of the mps were great shooters. I tried a long slide that I believed to be a match pistol. It came with a factory fiber optic green front site. The MAJOR difference was the trigger reset. It was a lot shorter and crisper than a regular mp. I mean there was a big difference. It did not feel any lighter but there was a lot less travel for the sear reset.
Did the function test yesterday. 150 rounds of mixed 9mm (old carry loads, wwb, blazer aluminum, and some milsurp ball with hard primers) in a baggie shake the baggie and load mags. 100% function. Slow fire, rapid fire, weak hand, loose grip, held sideways it worked. Next weekend I'll try to get in some accuracy work.
I picked mine up from the gunsmith this weekend. I shot several hundred rounds through it when I first bought it and it shot very well. It should shoot great with the trigger job. If anyone is looking for a gunsmith for the M&P's, or any other pistol for that matter, I highly recommend Pedro Ortiz at Thunderbolt Guns in Thunderbolt, GA (Savannah area). He does great work and is a true Gentleman to deal with. If anybody wants contact info let me know.
I purchased the M&P9PRO which is the M&P9L with a fiber optic front sight and a factory trigget job. Great ergonomics, reliable functioning, can't wait for the weather to warm up so that I can get a few thousand rounds through it.
