M&P 9 new buyer advice needed

I've had an M&P9 for a couple years. The only time I remove the frame tool is to change backstraps, check the batteries in my CT grips or to demonstrate changing the backstraps. Mine is in tight and I could see how you might damage the tab. I've been lucky so far, no damage. Anything I might use the frame tool for other than changing backstraps are done with other high-tech tools: screwdriver, pocket knife, fingers, punches, etc.

Check the S&W warranty. Does it apply to original owner or any owner?

Morning.

I have been looking at the new M&P 9 compact and really like it, especially with the 3 back straps fits my hand very nicely. I'm leaning towards a used one since this will be my first handgun to get comfortable with.
But even after reading the other M&P vs glock thread, I still have a couple questions.

-When looking at a used M&P what should I specifically be looking for other than major ware/scratches on the outside?

-what is a decent price? I have seen $399 at my local shop, and mid 4's on gun broker?

-Are there any recalls or certain production runs that I should try to stay away from?

That is all the questions I can remember that I wanted to ask, but sure I will have more.
Thank you very much for you time and I appreciate any and all help.

Brian

My vote goes to a good 22 pistol or revolver for your first. Learn to shoot with cheap ammo that does not recoil. Then graduate up.

If you just have to get a centerfire first, then by all means, get a full size, not a compact, as it will be easier to shoot well.

Shawn, you bring up a good point about the 22. I was planning on buying a 22 at the same time as when I buy the 9. So that I can go to the range for cheap and shoot as much as I want and not feel it as much in the wallet.

dont forget the external lock and mag disconnect are options. do you want either feature?

get a price quote from buds, you might just be able to buy new for that price.

I honestly have not put much thought into either feature. The different locks you mentioned, are they standard or special add-on?
Also how do i know if the gun i purchase is equipped with this?
Could you please explain to me the pro's/cons to these locks as I was not aware of them?
I plan to search the smith site to get more info on top off anything else here. Thanks.

Brian

skyflyer,

I'm looking on buds site and I found a mM&P 9c that i like, but it says bud's price. But show's no actual price, how do I find this out, do I need to call them?

Thanks

i copied the description of the lock and mag disconnect from shooting times.

When the magazine is removed, a lever at the rear of the magazine well pivots forward, moving the trigger bar out of alignment with the sear, making it impossible for the pistol to be fired. Reinserting the cartridge container realigns these two units allowing the pistol to be fired by a normal pull of the trigger. Last, as on most new S&W handguns, the M&P is fitted with the Internal Safety System. A special key is inserted into a small hole on the left rear of the frame and rotated, activating the magazine disconnect safety and preventing unauthorized firing of the pistol whether or not a magazine is in the pistol.

short version drop the mag gun wont function.

keyed external lock, off gun operates as designed. on gun is a paper weight.

i cant tell you if the features are for you, just wanted to let you know they are available.

buds prices are very competitive, just request price quote by email.

you will need to locate a good ffl for your area to compare total cost, but my guys cost is roughly about the sales tax you dont have to pay.
