OK, guys, I've come full circle and have decided to explore the possibility of using the M&P 9 Shield for CC AND home defense.

As you may recall, I had issues with the Shield due to its short grip handle (no room for my little finger) ; however, I have been persuaded to try the 7-round mag with a Pearse Grip Extender and/or the 8-round mag with extension, in order to resolve my issues with the short grip.

Firstly, is this a realistic endeavor? Is the M&P 9 Shield a viable option for CC AND home defense?

Secondly, are other mag options available?

Thanks, guys!

The Pearse Grip Extender works great with my Shield 40. I have been thinking about switching to a Shield 9mm as I just don't enjoy shooting the 40. I love it in my CORE and shoot great groups with the Shield 40 out to 10 yards shooting 2 inch groups. it is just not fun to shoot and I like to shoot the gun I carry often. With out the mag extender it is even harder to control. Not a gun I can do double taps well with. I have ordered a holster and going to start carrying the 40 CORE. Don

Watching this thread. Kinda have a shield 40 on my mind. Fortunately I have a buddy that owns one that will let me try it out.

The Shield is an excellent gun, and if it feels good to you it will also work well as both a home defense/cc gun. Of course, you could also always split the difference and go with the M&P 9c with the pinky mag extension. If I was looking for ONE do it all gun (thankfully I have more guns - they're like guitars and I can't have just one) it'd be the 9c. It also has the ability to take the full-size mag, and you can put the x-grip extenders on them to make it feel more like the full size in your hand.

I carry the 9c, and carry a full size mag as my spare mag. I also have the Shield and the FS as well.

It's viable, but far from ideal. I personally wouldn't do it. I definitely would not be comfortable with my Glock 26 being my sole home defense weapon. Unlike a public self-defense scenario, you generally simply cannot escape a home invasion and must make a stand. I want a substantial weapon in that situation.

Visualize having to engage two or three armed intruders in your home. Picture them breaking in while you're watching TV or while your sleeping in the middle of the night and charging down the hall towards you and your family. Would you feel well armed with a Shield?

I carry my Shield 40 for certain places for CC and as has been said here many times...carry what you shoot well and feel comfortable with for CC....for home pretty much the same thing....you will get many different opinions....

The Shield is my EDC, and I mostly just keep it handy as a nightstand gun. I have 2 other higher capacity guns that I have kept loaded as HD guns (A 13+1 Springfield P9C and a 14+1 SAR K2-45) As much as I like both of those, the Shield is the only one that I can say has gone 2000 rds without a malfunction of any kind. 8+1 might not be ideal, but it's a VERY reliable 8+1, and I shoot it as well as the other larger guns, at least at inside distances.

I recently put the Pearce extension on my 7 round mags and it allows a full finger grip and makes me get a high consistant grip on the gun. Don't know why I waited so long. I CC it everyday and have for a few years.

I like a rail on my bedside gun with a small tactical flashlight attached so I have my M&P FS9 there.

Those Pearce's are the best $10 I ever spent. I hated the 7 round mags til I got those, now it's my preferred mag. Usually when I shoot at the range it's with the 7 round.

Food for thought: 9mm is the standard for defense rounds - and less $$$.

Regarding the Shield, it does seem that folks are shooting both (40 & 9), then buying the 9mm. ;)

I'll check out the 9C. Thanks.

they're like guitars and I can't have just one...

Funny how that happens, huh?

I started out with a Shield but I was never really comfortable with the capacity. So when I found out that the 9C was essentially the same footprint as a Shield with 50% greater capacity I decided to go with the C.

As somebody pointed out a 9 C is small enough to carry in your pocket while you're at home but with enough capacity to at least give you some ability to respond to a home invasion.

I also like the fact that in my case since I have a 9 full size I only have to buy the full size magazines and they will fit both guns.

All that said having fired a Shield my only issue with it is capacity and if that's not an issue for you I'd go with the Shield

My husband and I each have three HD weapons choices, and three carry choices. The 9mm Shield is one of the carry choices.

For walking around the house (answering the door), we prefer snub .357, for shooting through a housecoat pocket without slide impingement or snagging on material.

For sleep defense, our nightstands both have full size 9mm to use until we can go the three steps to the open safe and retrieve the loaded 12ga and lever action .357.

If all I had was the Shield, I would make do with that, but we have tweaked our selections until we feel very confident with our choices. We also make sure we shoot all of them regularly.

My Shield with 9rnds of the best 9mm sd ammo money can buy is on my night stand in arms reach. Two steps away is 870 with 5rnds of 00 buck shot. If you open my bedroom door in the middle of the night... well as they say, "May God have mercy on your soul!"

I already own the 9 fs that I want to use for home defense. I was looking for a more compact for an edc. Thanks for the info. I will definitely looks closer at this.

Okay, I'm an old fart, sort of... I spent many years with a Colt Python on my bed stand and felt real good about it. Time has past, and I've embraced the polymer guns, but if I could only have one it would be my Shield. As it is, I can have more than one so I don't have to compromise; it's in the signature, 40 Shield for walking around, 5" Pro Series in 40 S&W by the bed.

I carry the Shield mostly. I have a CZ P07 that I occasionally carry but sees all nightstand duty. The Shield stays loaded and ready as a backup. I also have my AR at the ready at night. The Shield, for me, is not sufficient as the only option for HD. Two or more attackers and you may wish for more weapon. Just my opinion.

Many variables to both cc and home defense, but for cc I either have my 9 Shield or Ruger Lc9s with spare mags. For home defense I'm a firm believer in a 12 gauge. Remington 870 for any late night unwanted guests.
