Those of you who have had both the M&P 9 and the Glock 19, what do you like/dislike about each? Where does the M&P outshine the Glock and vice versa?

Any difference in reliability/durability?

I was looking at both at my LGS today. Gen 4 G19 is $599 with three mags. Smith is $525. I assume that comes with two?

I like the grip on the Gen 4 Glock better than the grip on the M&P. The M&P trigger was better than the on on the Glock. I am really just looking for a 9mm shooter. Don't plan on carrying it or anything.

The two really are not comparable. The comparable Glock is the model 17. One is a full sized duty pistol, the other is a mid-sized carry gun. They serve two different roles. If you are not carrying it, buy the M&P, it has more rounds and the extra barrel length makes it a better HD/Range gun.

The Glock comes into it's own a a carry gun, maybe one of the better ones on the planet. It's small enough to easily conceal, yet big enough to shoot well, 15 round mags, what's not to like.

The big advantages in my mind Glock has over the M&P are, I can buy a $25 trigger kit, spend an hour and have a quality short reset and a 4 pound trigger. Doing the same on an M&P costs me $100. Additionally, Glock mags are 1/2 or less in cost than M&P mags.

Either one you buy, put a set of tritium Tru-Glo sights on it. They are great for night and bright sun situations. Both are great guns for what they are.

JMO.

I have a g1&3 G19. I like the G19. It fits and fills in my hands better and it balances better in my hand. The MPc feel top and front heavy to me.

The M&P9c and the G19 are roughly comparable, with the M&P being a bit smaller and holding fewer rounds. For carry I like the 9c. The G26's grip is a bit small for me. For non-carry get the G17 or fullsize M&P. I prefer the M&P's trigger. Both are rugged, reliable and durable. You can get a manual safety on the M&Ps if you want one. Try before you buy. Most ranges have both as rentals.

I have had both. Out of the box the Glock has a better trigger and in my opinion that is all. I like the ergos of the M&P much better. The trigger is awful on the M&P out of the box. The Pro Series is an improvement. Reliability is great on both platforms.
I think the M&P Pro Series is a better value. It includes night sights and the better trigger for the same price as a Gen 4 Glock 19. You will have to spend another $100-$150 to get the Glock there.
I would advise shooting both then make your decision as to what fits you best.

I have a Gen 4 Glock 23 that I like a lot. Also have an SD9 that I've been very much on the fence about. Want a 9mm that is more fun to shoot. The M&P 9c is a really nice carry gun, but grip is a little on the small side. Glock 19 feels better. M&P 9 grip is a little too big. I've never liked the feel of the Glock 17/22.

Other than the grip, the controls on the M&P 9 are nicer looking and feel/work better than the Glocks.

Before I got my 9c I looked at it, the G26 and the XDs in 9mm. I wanted something with an extra safety ( I'm used to 1911 safeties). I shot both the G26 and my 9c before my decision. I was not able to shoot the XDs because of the recall. Truthfully the XDs was at the top of my list with the 9c a close second. I found someone who traded my Steyr M40-A1 for the 9c. That is how my decision was made. I wanted a gun for CC, range time and HD. The XDs is still on my wish list, but I am keeping my 9c.

Good question. However a G 17 ( Gen 3 or 4) compared the S&W M&P is a better comparison. But some things would apply to both.
1. I like the ergonomic grip of the S&W better than the Glock grip.
2. There are far more accessories readily available for the Glock.
3. The Glock 17 is a lighter pistol than the S&W and I like light better.
However, it can be argued that the extra weight dampens recoil a bit; but I do not see this as much of a real advantage
4. The trigger on the Glock has the edge because of the distinctive reset which you can feel. The break on firing is good in both; but the S&W is mushy on reset.
5. I change the sights of both to tru glos so that is even.
6. I like the mag release on the S&W a little better than the Gen 3 or Gen 4 Glocks.
7. Right now the S&W has not been as torture tested as the Glock and is not in as widespread use. It is the second most used pistol in IDPA and IPSC though with Glock being the first. The S&W team is slowly putting it on the map. Time will tell.
I really like both pistols and have a hard time making up my mind which is better for me.

My rating between the two:

Ergo: M&P > G19
Stock sights: M&P >>> G19
Trigger reset: G19 >>> M&P
Trigger weight: M&P = G19
Reliability: M&P = G19
Accuracy: Both M&P and G19 >>>> you and me
CCW: G19 > M&P
Mag availability: G19 > M&P. Yeah, I know M&P mags are now available but they were hard to find two months ago.
Field strip: G19 > M&P
Customer Service: SW > Glock. Just from my experience.
After Market: G19 > M&P
Aesthetic: M&P >>> block uh I meant G19.
BTF: M&P >>>> G19

I didn't really care about the above comparison though. I chose M&P's because they were made in USA.

After cursing Glocks for 20+ years I recently gambled on a Gen 4 M19 as a step up from a 5 shot 442. I had not previously been too impressed with the M&P's trigger, and if nothing else Glock has a long track record in the real world. I was also looking for reliability first and foremost.

I've only had the Glock for a month but the round count is building. The trigger is noticeably better than the older ones. I also have a smallish hand and the new S size grip and stippling suit me fine. The captive double recoil spring does damp recoil down a little. The sights aren't much to write about but the gun shoots to point of aim and I will probably change them out eventually.

I am surprised at how well the gun shoots; a previous older Model 17 was a disaster. Maybe I've learned how to shoot these things. I tried some 125 grain Hornady/6.0 gr Unique loads in it at 15 yards and it put 4 of 5 into the same hole, slow fire. ???

It's just a tool, but if it keeps this up it will be my new EDC.

Never thought I'd see the day.

M&P's point better for me.
Glocks shoot better at farther distances for a handgun.
I have more experience with the G19 than the M&P 9.
I find the tech'd out triggers to be very different between the two models.

I came to the similar conclusions when I purchased my Gen4 G19. (i.e. happens to be USA made). The M&P 9 was bigger than I wanted. The M&P 9c grip was shorter than I wanted. Both platforms are very reliable. IMO, the G19 is the perfect blend of size and capacity. Can fit the role as a home defense, range gun or CCW. It's also a lot of fun to shoot.

I just compared these two about a week and a half ago before making my decision on a purchase. I went with the M&P. The M&P felt better in the hand, the trigger reset and pull weren't like the Glock but I was more accurate with the M&P than the Glock. Not saying the Glock is bad or that the M&P is better but for me it actually took me renting both and shooting both to see which I liked more.

I had a Glock 23 & now own an M&P40 & a M&P40C. I feel the grip is much better & the trigger on the Compact manufactured in July of this year rivals the G23. The well used full size 40 is 4 years old & although the gun is well broken in it's not quite as good as the new compact but still acceptable to me.

I find I can get on target faster with the M&Ps. I'm not sure whether it's the grip or the balance or both.

This was where I came out also.

I shot several different pistols at the range and then made up my mind on the S&W M&P FS in 9mm, stock no. #209301.

My pro / con list (as a very green shooter) for the G19 was:

Pro

- Price
- Value for money
- Reliability

Con

- Ergonomics (call it what you will, the pistol felt weird to me)
- To my inexperienced feel the magazines felt very cheaply constructed
- Plastic sights
- Aesthetics. The thing was unattractive, put plainly. YMMV of course.
- Slide bite. We had a small band-aid moment once when the slide bit Mrs. Llando88. She handed the Glock to me and said 'not this one'.

Having said all that it certainly does the job it was designed to do.

On the S&W side, again, as a new shooter, it starts with looks. You just want to pick up the pistol. I felt immediately comfortable with it in my hand, like I was pointing.

The replaceable backstrap, as well as built in disconnect tool were great features, to me.

The fact that the mag release was reversible, and the slide stop was dual sided meant it suited me as a lefty, too.

I also liked that it was made in the USA, frankly.

Lot of great input in this thread by people with much more experience than I. But I don't think either pistol is a bad choice.
