I was visiting a shop while I was at a nearby town and cane across a used M&P 9L that is in great shape, the price was $600.00 and I was tempted to make an offer but decided to wait. Would I be better off getting the M&P 9 pro 5 inch?

I believe all the 5"(9L) guns are Pro's, the only options are Core or non-Core. This is current production. Not sure what the options were when the used one you're looking at was made.

I think they used to make the 9L, but now all the 5" are pros or pro CORE.
My local LGS said he can get a 5" pro for under $600 ($660 CORE) new. I'd pass on that deal and go for one with a warrantee. $600 for a used gun must have been a Mega Retailer. Check with your small local guys. The standard M&P 9mm fs is only $500.

I had one more thought, there might be collector value in the discontinued 9L, but I wouldn't know anything about that since I don't collect firearms.

Did the old style 9L have the pro trigger or was it standard? The Pro trigger is quite a bit better than the standard trigger.

There was a NIB 5" Pro 9 on Gunbroker a month ago for $569.00 free shipping.

I ended up buying a "like new" in the box 5" Pro 9 for $450 Dealer that did the transfer said if it would have had the chamber flag in place he would have assumed it was brand new.

The 9L was only just a full size frame with a 5" slide that slanted a bit towards the recoil spring. Didn't have any trigger mods IIRC. Pic of a 9L slide

I'd say you are better off getting the one you call an M&P Pro 5 inch. There are four different versions of the M&P 9mm 5 inch barrel that I see available. Three should be fairly easy to get and one is LEO. The sights, trigger pull, and included magazines should show the differences quickly.
This is the list:

m&p9l core, sku 178058, 4-5.5 lb. trigger, white dot sights, slide cut for optics

m&p9l, sku 305701, std trigger, white dot sights (LE catalog)

mp9 pro, sku 178010, 17 round, 4-5.5 lb. trigger, Novak Fiber optic sights

mp9 pro, sku 178048, 10 round, 4-5.5 lb. trigger, Novak Fiber optic sights

Well, it looks like there is at least one more. SKU 151246. Bud's has it listed as "M&P9L 5" Night Sights, 3 Mags, Mag Safety". It sounds like an LE version but with a standard SKU. I also don't see that listed in any of the S&W catalogs.

I just asked my LGS to order a 9mm FS with the thumb safety. I could not get the 5" with a thumb safety so I got the 4.25" barrel. He said it will be $480 plus tax. I didn't think to ask if I could get one with night sights.
