I have a Shield 9, for EDC, that I love. It's been reliable, and I'm able to shoot groups at 15 yards, that are half the size of my Walther P99, using the single action trigger. I'm thinking of trading the P99 for an M&P 9mm FS. The Shield feels good in my hand, as does the FS. I am not as comfortable with the M&P9c.

Then I came across a 639, wood grips, and a squared trigger guard. They are asking 469, and I will probably take a beating on the trade. I am able to shoot my CZ 75D compact, single action, more accurately than the Shield. I can get a good deal on the new M&P FS (In Stock), or CZ P01 if they can get one, at a different LGS, where I am known. I'm getting older, and have problems with some guns (like Glocks), due to arthritis.

Do you have any advice, or cautions?

Thanks!

Curious that you like the FS but not the Compact, they are pretty much the same grip (shorter butt), maybe they had different sized backstraps installed when you tested them. I don't have a shield because I carry my 9c and don't see the need (for me) to have anything smaller. My FS feels exactly the same as my C and they both use the same Bladetech holster.

I guess it's just feel. I don't like most double stack guns, that's why I asked about the 639. I don't like short grips either. I only use the 8 round extended magazine, on the Shield. It's comfortable, and I shoot it well. The M&P FS, does feel very comfortable to me, even though it's a double stack. They might have the thinner grip on the one I tried.

I have both the M&P 9mm FS as well as the CZ P-01 and love both for different reasons. I would think that the P-01 is very close to your 75 D, so I'm not sure why you would want to essentially duplicate this gun. Of course the major differences are that the M&P is striker fired, whereas the CZ is DA/SA, and the M&P is polymer; the CZ has a cast aluminum frame. Both have a natural point of aim and are very accurate thanks to a low bore axis and both have excellent recoil management.
What I especially like about the CZ is the ergonomics of the grip; when I hand the gun to someone whose never held the CZ, they immediately remark at how spectacular the grip feels on this gun. And even with the M&P's three provided backstraps, the CZ has a much better grip, IMHO, for my medium-sized hand.
The M&P is much easier to detail strip, whereas the CZ has all kinds of unusual springs and small parts, although field stripping of both is fairly comparable, with the M&P clearly being easier.
Overall, if you are looking for something that is accurate and easy to shoot, the M&P 9 FS is very difficult to beat.
