I just purchaed an M&P with a serial number of C224224 and was wondering about a date of maufacture. Has a 2" barrel, flat latch, and an aluminum cylinder with the gold box.
1952 is probably correct for manufacture, but it could have shipped later. Regarding shooting it, I wouldn't were it mine. I might load up some pipsqueak minimum .38 Special lead bullet loads to satisfy my curiosity and just so I could say I did it.
Be careful, and as a matter of fact it is recommended that it not be fired with the aluminum cylinder. The gun caries a premium as far as value goes, but it is more of a collector gun, not a shooter.
Don, I have M&P Airweight C224204 and it shipped in August 1953. Please post a picture or two of yours. Like the Chiefs Special Airweight the M&P AW began production in '52 and the military trials. But the commercial models for the most part didn't really start shipping till '53. As a very wise man once said..."I hope that this helps." Lee
I will try to post pictures when I receive the original box. They forgot to ship it. I did not know it had the aluminum cylinder when I bought. I also dont think that the pawn shop knew it was an aluminum cylinder when the sold it.
