I have owned the M&P Bodyguard 380 (laser-less) since March of last year and felt inclined to post this thread for those of you who may be in the market for a subcompact, lightweight pocket pistol. I actually picked it up because I was looking for a deep concealment pistol, one I could stash in a pocket holster when a larger gun isn't feasible. So, I picked up this pistol on a whim while I was at a gun show. I say this because I was actually in the market for the Kahr CW380, but the dealer I was buying from only had the much pricier P380. I went with the M&P instead.

I have approximately 1,000 rounds through the M&P Bodyguard and have shot various types of ammo - Perfecta FMJ (from Walmart), Blazer Brass, Winchester White Box, etc. My preferred self defense ammo (in any caliber) is Speer Gold Dot. I have put approximately 75 of these down range. I have not had a single failure in any way. All ammo has fed and fired reliably. I was actually shocked when I watched Hickok45's review of the previous model and newer model M&P Bodyguard's. There are multiple times he pulls the trigger and "click"... nothing happens. Not sure if S&W tweaked the model so the hammer pulls back further and drops harder, but again, no issues at all like that here.

Now I can't be one sided - As for the cons of the pistol... it does have a very heavy (and when I say very heavy, I mean VERY heavy), long trigger pull. However, I carry this as a get the **** (fill in the blanks with your favorite 4 letter word) off me gun, so I don't feel that this is an issue for me. I am not trying to be the American Sniper with a 380 here. And I actually view the trigger pull as a pro since it's a pocket carry pistol. I can't believe there is a thumb safety, but it is what it is. I carry it without the safety engaged. The chances of the safety being accidentally engaged (or disengaged) are slim to none due to it being a very "positive" engagement.

Also, the takedown is fairly easy, but getting the little pin back in when putting it back together can be a pain in the you know what. However, I don't plan to field strip in a gun fight, so who cares? It just takes a little more time than it should.

Overall (the main reason I purchased this pistol), I think it is an excellent carry choice if you are into pocket pistols. There's not one pair of slacks or shorts I own that it doesn't fit into. I suppose not many of us on here wear skinny jeans, so you should be okay too. Might have some trouble in them Wranglers though. :D

Thanks for this report. I'm trying to decide between the Smith M&P and the Taurus .380 and this helps.

I too own one of the non lazer newer model M&P380 & After 200-300 rounds so far not a single failure.. I love this little pistol & it has become my EDC. I saw the Hickok45 video & if I'm not mistaken I believe he said in the video that it had a after market trigger installed, more reason that if it aint broke, dont fix it....

Yes I do believe the after market trigger was an issue with one of the models he had. I also believe he had the same issue with the stock trigger model. Glad to hear your experience has been as good as mine!

Its my Carry. Im totally in agreement. its a defence pistol. i have a target pistol. this one shoots anything i put up the pipe. mix and match. hp and fmj... i ended up white sighting the entire front sight.
ditto also on the trigger pull. and the saftey. also for me as a southpaw i hit the mag release sometimes.
IMHO great match between concealment, weight and power. i can carry this in my swim trunks! or a light shirt in the summer. how many of us have got the 9mm+p or whatever and left it in the car? i did till i started carrying a .32 top break. this has more power and wieghs less than a walther ppk when loaded. great pistol.

I have the old BG380 with the integrated laser, but I largely agree with you. Personally I think the trigger is fine, but there is a Galloway Precision after-market trigger kit for people who want a shorter pull.

This is my EDC also, original w/laser. I know all the issues and fixes for the pistol and have complete faith that it fire when I need it to. Hundreds of rounds, including my reloads, and not one single failure of any kind..."no ka oi"

I agree with the points made by the OP - fretting over the long, heavy trigger is pointless, good design, handy, and all that. I like the decent sights and the safety. As mentioned about the safety, use it/don't use it as you prefer - easy! :)

Unfortunately I have one that misfires with about everything I have tried in it. Serial number is EAY8xxx. It is hopeless with any of the normal European-brand FMJs (RWS, GECO, etc.) and the Winchester flat-nose FMJs (don't know whether those are US-made or ?). It seems reliable with Remington ammunition, but when it fails with 4 out of 5 brands tried, who would trust it? So I guess it will be making a return visit to Springfield to get straightened out. I need to get the process started. :(

I've got them both. The advantage the Taurus has (for me) is that it's both tiny and light. I can comfortably carry in the pocket of a pair of gym shorts without it pulling my pants down.

My BG is a couple years old with the integrated laser and it's got a little more heft to it. I've never had any issues with this gun with the exception of a laser failure when I first got it. S&W shipped a replacement laser and we're all good.

I agree with the OP, the safety is a pain so for me it's never engaged, and it does have a "robust" trigger pull.

At the end of the day, whether in a pocket or on my ankle the BG is my go to BUG.

Can anyone offer up comparisons between the BG 380 w/o laser and the Kel Tec P3AT? I'm thinking of buying the BG as an alternative CCW to my Kel Tec w/crimson trace.

Thanks!

Larry,
The slide cocks the Kel Tec. I take it the trigger cocks the BG which is why it has second strike capability? Ken
