M&P Bodyguard Issues

Well I decided to bite the bullet, so to speak, and ordered a new M&P Bodyguard 380 from a friend that is a home based FFL. I was pleasantly surprised when they released a non-laser version and added the M&P stylings.

The weapon came in last Monday and I took delivery. My initial impression was good. I liked the size, weight and feel. The trigger pull was about as bad as I expected having owned a early LCP. I eagerly took it home for it's first field strip and cleaning.

This is where things went bad. I kept obsessing over just how gritty the trigger felt and found myself with a Streamlight in my mouth as I feverishly fondled the thing as it just didn't seem right. Then I spotted it. The hammer sat straight up and down at rest but a bit of pressure from pulling the trigger made it shift and lean over to the right. As the hammer cycled through its motion, it rubbed the right hand side of the slide. Field stripping and inspection revealed a small "rainbow" on the slide where the hammer was rubbing. Not good.

That Tuesday (the day after purchase) I called Smith. Very nice people. I was assured this was not acceptable and definitely not normal. I was advised to send it in but they were not taking any new repairs until August 11. Really? I just bought a new pistol and was asked to wait several weeks before I could sent it in to rectify a defect. It is what it is I suppose. Not the end of the world.

I contacted my FFL friend and upon discussing the situation with his distributor, they agreed to replace it with another pistol. RMA number was issued and off it went.

I picked up my exchange/replacement from my FFL today. The new BG seems much better. The hammer still shifts a bit to the right when in motion, but does not appear to touch the slide....yet. For now I'll hang on to it a bit to see how it does. I always have the lifetime warranty to fall back on. I wonder if this is a characteristic of these new models or if quality control just isn't what it once was.

I'm curious, anyone else have any issues with the new model?

380 Body Guard

I have an older one maybe 3 years old. No problems with it other that the laser sight screw backing out, and locking the gun up. I put lock tight on it, no additional problems. I have at least 500 rounds out of it.

Just bought my wife this pistol for her birthday last week. We went shooting this past Sunday. There were a couple of things I noticed. Nothing major and nothing S&W won't take care of:
1. - We shot 106 rounds through the gun. Twice on the last shot in the mag with the little extension, the case extracted, but the slide did not lock back showing it was empty as it should. Now, could it be a weak spring in the magazine? Maybe the slide release was pushed by a fat finger since this is a small piece? I'm not 100% sure. I will however pay extremely close attention to it the next time we take it out.

2. - This is a common issue and I'm not sure what the resolve is. I've operated the one I purchased and even checked 2 more BG380 guns and they all do the same thing. It seems the magazine release on the gun is too long or pushed in too far when the mag is out of the grip. When i put the magazine in all 3 BG380's, the magazine would catch slightly on the mag release on the top of the magazine housing. Closely inspected inside the grip frame and noticed the mag release from what appears to be sticking out too far. Why I say that is cause normally when you look in the grip frame, you should only see the angle on the slide release. However, on this one and the other 2 I looked at, when looking at it, I can see the angle AND a flat side right below the release angle. I pushed the mag release in with my thumb not more than 1/8", then slid the mag up into the grip and it went it without a hitch. So, I will be calling them after our next shoot with this gun so I have all the correct information when I do.

Other than that, the gun was accurate. It was easy to field strip. They must have improved the slide release lever from earlier serial numbers, because I didn't have one bit a problem putting it back in and locking the slide after taking it apart.

I just bought my BG380 in June...its the jam-o-matic version...its been sent back once already...after investing $175 in good quality 95gr hardball and defensive ammo...it still has FTF's....gonna have to get rid of it...worst experince ever owning a (so called) quality firearm. This is just my experience...I'm glad others are happy with theirs...but after investing almost $600.00 in gun, ammo, holster, range time I'm not very happy with this product and would not recommend it to anyone.
Tks

My friend just purchased a new BG380 and had problems with fail to feed, stovepipes and not locking back on the last round. He sent it in and got it back last week, and it still has fail to feed and stovepipe issues. He's not a happy camper.

I must be a lucky one. Knock on wood, I have put close to 500 through my M&P bodyguard with a single hiccup. Eats anything a put through it. My mags were tough to seat at first, easy if you held in the mag release button, but after a few trips to the range, no more hang ups.

At least I'm not alone...:(

Well, so far I haven't had any issues with the replacement. I'm still a bit concerned about the hammer moving a bit to the right, but I'm keeping an eye on it. So far so good.

Anyone know if the newer M&P model still has the MIM firing pin or did they finally move to something a bit more robust?

both of mine are awsome, the original laser and the new non laser.. mags seemed to hit the release when I first inserted meekly, I gave it a little slap, works fine. I just looked at the hammer, looks like it may rub lightly on the right side, still works and shoots great!! Don't see any issue at all with it. THINK i'LL JUST ENJOY IT LIKE IT IS! Seems like another quality functioning weapon by S&W to me. I see no QC issues at all. Been carrying the heck out of it the last couple months.

Good luck with yours.

My hammer does the same thing...I've read many post about the hammer position...I really like the pistol...it went bang everytime I pulled the trigger...it was very accurate...mine just has some FTF problems which is unacceptable in a carry weapon.

Interesting. Any ammo in particular or was it just random?

American Eagle 95gr hardball, Privi Partizan 95gr hardball, Hornady CD and Remington Ultimate Defense...random FTF with all ammo using 3 different mags....I was really suprised on the FTF with the hardball...
