M&P Compact 22 Doesn't Like Federal Ammo

My M&P Compact 22 appears to not like any Federal ammo. I have tried several varieties and I get repeated failure to load and failure to eject.

I just finished using 300 rounds of Federal Champion 40 grain 1240 fps. Yesterday at the range I had many failure to load and failure to eject. See attached photographs for failure to eject.

When a round failed to load I removed the round to check it. I was able to turn/rotate the lead bullet slightly with my fingers and I could move the bullet slightly back and forth left and right. Is this normal?

I have had good luck with Remington Golden Bullet and I am now going to try CCI.

I never have troubles with my 9mm or .45 ACP ammo.

Seems that 22lr can be finicky not only by brand but by gun.

I have a Buckmark that is near perfect with Minimags but I'd have occasional issues with Fed plated and lead nosed ammo. But my compact 22 eats that ammo just fine. In fact well over 1k rounds with 0 issues with the compact regardless of round used.

So I could only suggest once you find what ammo works well in "your" gun then best to stick with it.

For inexpensive bulk ammo, yes, it's probably normal.

Like Ranger17 said, .22's can be finicky. My wife's Ruger chokes on anything except Remington Golden Bullet ammo.

That's odd. I run exclusively Federal Champion ammo through mine (the Blue 525 rd box). Eats them like Skittles.

I personally won't run any Remington .22LR ammo through any of my .22's. It's 10 FTF/FTEs per magazine, limited only be magazine capacity.

Sounds like we have the exact opposite weapons!

I've decided that Federal is for revolvers. My semis all hate it. Some more, some lessI see FTE (extract) on a regular pattern.

The best suggestion I would have is to keep the gun spotless. That seems to help.

The only Federal ammo I've had trouble with is the ALUMINUM cased; happened this weekend on my 45 Shield, see below...

Hmmm. I have the full size MP22 and have put Federal bulk, Remington bulk various CCI loads and also The Aquila Super Extra (which I find to be on par with CCI ammo at a lower price) thru it with no issues at all. Surprised there would be such a difference in the 2 pistols.

Never tried Federal but I run mostly Remington Golden bullets through mine with only the occasional fail to fire. Feeds and ejects fine. Beyond that I've really only run various CCI and one other 14** fps round through it

My 1980's vintage Ruger 10/22 hates Federal ammo, and those things are supposed to be able to run with anything. I've never understood how the US ammunition manufacturers can come up with such quality centerfire ammo yet treat rimfires like they're just making caps for toy guns.

Welcome to the world of .22 semi-autos. Sometimes the gods will smile and you'll get one that feeds everything flawlessly; other times you'll get one that will work fine with most loads, but choke on one; yet other times, you may be cursed with a pistol that only likes one load. For the most part it's just the nature of the beast, I am afraid. One more reason why a .22 semi-auto is probably not the best choice for self defense.

My 22 compact developed a dislike of Federal and CCI sv after 2 years of trouble free use. I sent it back to S&W for a look see. They polished the feed ramp and replaced the slide stop spring (iirc) and its performance is greatly improved. Now it eats everything without issue, but still has the rare hiccup with Federal.
