M&P Gen2 coming?

If it meets your needs now, , I'd buy it now.

I would add that it will continue to meet your needs for years to come regardless of what new versions come out. It is not like computers where you have to upgrade to run the latest software.

However, if you really want the latest and greatest (nothing wrong with that), then wait until shot show to see what comes out.

If they can make an M&P that's modular like Sig's p250/320, without changing the ergonomics, That would be great! Especially if I could still use the same holsters.

Sig's serialized 'gun' is the core of the P320.

A similar M&P would be a clean slate, a radical departure from the Smith and Wesson 'Military and Police' 2007 pistol design.

More likely is a few tweaks to the barrel/slide to meet the accuracy requirement (quoted online as 1" at 50 yards), combined with the corporate .mil know-how of General Dynamics and Because: Merica!, as the discriminator for S&W.

We'll see.

That would be awesome!!!!

a modular design would be great... sig really is on the forefront of this.. that's definitely the future for polymer...

It makes sense that a "gen 2" is on the horizon coinciding with the military bid. It would be even better if they won the bid. Then the "M" in M&P would be accurate. Looks like I'll hold off on a 9c purchase for awhile as long as my current FS9 mags will work with it.

The Army RFP does not specifically call out a caliber and that was purposely done. If you plow through most of the 350 + pages you see they also leave open the door for ammunition other than FMJ as well.

The RFP is not just for the XM-17 modular pistol it also includes the holster + accessories as would be expected since the design must support laser sights and lights, In addition to have a modular grip and strangely is says it must support magazines of different sizes?

Most interesting is the precision requirement. The pistol must place 90% of shots within a 4in circle at 50 meters.. that is just short of 55 yards. So 9 of 10 shots (just for reference) in side a 4 in circle at 55 yards. At this point you are not only talking pistol, but the ammo plays a large part as well.

Either way Smith fans I would not hold off buying something thinking the next wiz bang pistol is around the corner. Trials start Q1 2016, those will go on for most of 2016, and at some point a selection will be made in 2017. Best case Production starts in 2018, and according to the army with the 1st units being fielded sometime in 2019. That's if Smith wins the contract for the XM-17. I kind of doubt there will be civilian variant or production available in any quantity much before 2020.

To top it off, if Hillary gets in she will probably make the contract contingent upon not offering the scary military pistol to the general public.

Think of that when you cast your vote next year.

All that said, I hope that S&W by some miracle can successfully compete and win the contract while putting out a pistol capable of that precision.

Remember they did not partner with Genera Dynamic's because they could make their pistol better, but so they could better navigate the DoD's red tape.

Good luck

dont think the mags will work with it.. probably why they given mags away.. cleaning out the warehouse...

This is why I have held off on getting an M&P 9 or 40. That and I am happy with my BG380 for the CCW role right now. lol

I suppose no one has noticed this on S&W's web site? This is page 20 of the August 2015 Investor Presentation. The last two lines are significant.

Nice catch, Shawn!

I tend to disagree with this. If S&W is going to "submit next-generation M&P pistol" to the Army, and "Our new pistol will also serve the consumer market" I would expect that consumer version to turn up sooner rather than later. I'm going to watch news coming from the SHOT show with considerable interest.

I think I'll hold off buying anything new until those arrive on the shelves, and I expect I'm not the only one. That reaction is reason enough for S&W not to dawdle over releasing Gen 2.

I won't be holding my breath, have seen this play out before. It will need to be a significant improvement to out do the Pro series 9L and CORE 9L that I am running.

The questions still remains if they will win the contract.. I hope they do. To think that will not affect the availability of the new pistol one way or another despite the will be commercially available comment may be a little naive.

Lets hope not

Over time I have found out that it takes manufactures about 2 years to work the bugs out of any new items or model. Cars, guns appliances and so on.

At the LGS today and was told that the next generation Shields are on the way.....??? I had to ask - what's new?
He satiated they would be coming with night sights and also an option with front fiber optic sight (like the XD-S).
Interesting, as he cant wait to pick up all the old trade in Shields for CHEAP.

I certainly can't imagine trading a "Gen 1" Shield for a "Gen 2" to get different sights. That said, it wouldn't necessarily surprise me to see something like that introduced as a "Gen 2" Shield since the Shield internals are different from the full size models that will be submitted to the Army.

For those full size models, the most hopeful thing in the military specs is the accuracy requirement. I don't think the "Gen 1" guns would pass the test. I think tighter tolerances and better fitting of the barrels along with, secondary, crisper triggers would be the answer and this might be worth trading for, or at least holding off the next purchase for!

It would be nice if the underside of the trigger guard was smoothed and rounded so it doesn't tear up my middle finger, the takedown lever didn't get hot during extended firing, and the texturing had more grip.
