M&P Gen2 coming?

Are you sure they weren't talking to their Glock rep?, S&W doesn't have "generations".
So all those "Gen 1-3" S&W guns are just a myth? Guns like the Gen 1 39, the Gen 2 645 and the Gen 3 4506 are just fantasy? They didn't exist and no one used that term? Hmmm, and all this time I thought they were real.;)

I bought a new MacBook Air a few years ago. The following week Apple came out with a brand-new version. They allowed me to exchange mine for the new one at no charge. I'm sure S&W will allow you to do the same.
I bought Adobe PSE 12 just two months before PSE 13 came out. When I asked about just getting a discount for the upgrade they told me to get bent (yes their language was very unprofessional). So, don't count on any sympathy from any company when they change their models.

Even with all that, S&W would be stupid to change the M&P now. It's probably the best selling handgun in the last 4 years. Why change a run away success? Sure, they'll make small upgrades, but they're not changing anything on a dramatic scale.

This is all speculation on my part. I have no idea what S&W is up to nor do I care. I won't be able to buy any new S&W guns anyway.

I think I should have said M&P generations, not S&W. I don't recall any references to the term when talking about the M&P (the plastic ones, not the steel revolvers);)

M&P Gen2 coming?

Hopefully a good trigger and a combat accurate 9mm are in the cards for Gen 2.

On a non-sarcastic point, I wonder if this is the fruits of the "General Dynamics" partnership we're seeing.

I agree. Reports of a requirement of 4" groups at 50 yards for the Army's MHS may force S&W to finally address the persistent FS9 accuracy problems.

The Test guns are due to Aberdeen end of January, so the timing mentioned (SHOT) makes sense.

Some idea of what a militarized M&P might look like could be had by referring to the Beretta M9A3.

I'd like to see redesigned grip inserts. A large insert without the abnormal palm swell would be nice.

Yes, I talked to them. The rumors are true and they said the next generation will be all 9's since other calibers are dead.

Interdasting.

Wonder what modifications / enhancements they'll make to the next generation.
The slide will read "2nd Generation" and the trigger will be colored silver instead of black. Also the magazine followers will be orange.
Apparently the sales of the M&P's have plateaued and they need a boost from sales to all the Generation 1 owners.

I took my cynical pill a bit early today ;)

Yup, rumors started around July 5th
Of what year?

I've read posts talking about 2nd Generation M&P's going back as far as 2012.

Is something actually happening or is this just more wishful thinking. ;)

I'm wondering if they are making a modular version to keep pace with the Sig P320 series... only because there isn't too much to improve on the current M&P's.

My guess is that they will consolidate all the calibers into the 45c size frame. Just a guess, but it would make sense, since this is the most shootable frame they make.

You heard it here first. What do I win?

My guess is that those above who have speculated that a Gen 2 would incorporate changes that may have been deemed necessary for the military trials are correct. It would make sense to move those into production. I'm hoping for even better accuracy, but not holding out hope for Apex like triggers.

LOL, this is highly unlikely. The military wouldn't hold it against them if they made the frames of their 9mm's strong enough to handle .40 S&W, and there is a demonstrated market for the caliber in both the civilian and law enforcement communities, no matter what someone wrote in a magazine. And... do you recon .45 APC is dead now too?

I'm interested in seeing their approach to remove the TRS tampon. Maybe move to a lateral spring with legs.

The M&P is already a modular design. Every part is a drop in.

The frames of the 9mm, .40S&W and .357Sig are already identical.

Yes, sir. That was my point, though perhaps I didn't make it very well.

It isn't a long step to make the frame of a 9mm pistol strong enough to handle .40 S&W, and .357 Sig and, assuming a "Gen 2" is reflective of changes made for the military trials being rolled out in general production, even if the Army is only interested in 9mm they surely will not complain if the frame is strong enough to handle more powerful calibers. In fact, I would think the ability to use the same frame for heavier calibers might be a strong selling point with more elite units.

With the frame set, it is all too easy to add those calibers to your catalog if the marketing department feels it is warranted. And I was expressing my opinion that there is indeed a market for the .40 S&W.

I suspect that "Gen2" is simply incorporated modifications and changes to meet the military requirements, and possibly the specifications of the FBI and any other LE agency jumping back on the 9mm bandwagon. Better accuracy, a crisper trigger, the aforementioned grip insert redesign (maybe 1911-esq), and any reliability enhancements, plus the ability to upgrade earlier M&Ps would be welcome.

So what would you all do?? Get a shield 9mm now OR wait until the first of the year??

Who did you talk to? Daniel Wesson or Horace Smith (or both);)
I spoke with Clint who was very upset that they were getting rid of his favorite caliber, the 44 mag for the 9. He said instead of blowing peoples heads clean off, he would now only be able to shoot pot marks in their skulls with the 9. I was heart broken with his response!
