Who shoots it and what M&P are you using? I heard if I use my Shield I would be at a disadvantage with the 3 inch barrel. I'm a small guy (only 5'5) with smaller hands. What would you suggest.

If you want to compete with your carry gun...do it.
Yes you will have more recoil then a longer barrel and the sight radius will make a difference..but there is no substitute for trigger time.
I'd say go for it...you can always buy another gun if you don't like competing with the shorty.

The first IDPA I shot was with a G26 and did ok.
I've also useda G36.
Run it. As if you had a revolver and you'll be fine.

It always amused me how many folks shoot IDPA using firearms and clothing they would never wear on the street.

It is a game. Just do it and you'll have fun.

A second disadvantage would be the rounds available to you in the Shield. The Shield would normally qualify as a BUG in IDPA. But shoot it and have fun.

The shield would would be at a huge disadvantage. As said above the shield is more suited for a back up gun.I have carried and used every thing from k and n frame revolvers, full size 1911,92 Beretta's,5906s,9mm full size m&p.My current IDPA and daily carry gun is a full size m&p 45.I really like to watch guys show up a couple of times with there ultra compact guns then the next time you see them they are using a full size or they just don't come back.If you want to use your shield go ahead and have fun.You will be shooting in the SSP class.Make sure you have a good holster 2 mag pouches and at the very least 4 mags and the max you can start with is 10 in the mag and 1 in the chamber. You must use the same capacity mags through out the match. No more than 2 spare mags on your belt.Go shoot have fun but don't be surprised if you end up buying another pistol if you continue to shoot IDPA.

I shoot IDPA with my M&P45 and my M&P9Pro but I am also going to start shooting it with my M&P9c, too. The best thing you can do is to go and shoot. Just make sure you have enough ammo and spare mags and just go! It is one of the fun thing you'll do in your life and might just motivate you to pick up a full size or compact pistol.

The only disadvantage you would be at is fewer rounds than many of the guns there, but you'd be at a bigger disadvantage if you DIDN'T go and do it! Now run, don't walk, to your nearest match and get you some!

That's about it; the Shield would be the last gun I would pull off the M&P rack for a match.

On the other hand it wouldn't stop me if the Shield was the only gun on the rack. :)

I'll be using my M&P 9L. Been using a Beretta Px4 Storm.

I've shot 2 matches with my 9C and did about the same as I did with my 1911s. I'll probably continue to shoot the compact simply because of the price of ammo.

Op, help us better understand what you want to accomplish. If you want to compete and post 'best possible score' or compete against others in the group, then the shield is a poor choice. Your score will drop just by the additional times you have to change mags. Your site radius is significantly less than the competition too.

If going to a match is to improve your skills, then it doesn't matter what gun you choose- it makes you better a better shooter and builds confidence.

If you plan on carrying your shield and you want to feel confident with it, then it is the best choice as it is what you would have in an emergency situation.

If a shield is all that is available, then go shoot, have fun and watch yourself get better.
If you think your hands are too small, remember most M&Ps have 3 different sized grips. (and I end up using a bigger grip than I first think feels good because it puts my finger in a better position on the trigger).

I have just started this year and shot 2 matches. I end up just below average in the group. I don't care-that isn't why I am there. I have an 5 1/4" barreled XDm in the safe but I shoot a 9c because that is what I carry.

You could possibly try to get your local match director to do a BUG match...

I use a kydex owb holster now but still looking for a nice, affordable kydex mag carrier. Any ideas?

CDNN.com

nice, dual mag holder for 6.99 and cheap shipping.

I bought 2 and found them to be as nice a finish as any and they have bolts to adjust fit.

Went back and bought 4 more for 1911s.

9c and at top third of my class (SSP). The big disadvantage - IMHO - comes from the targets beyond 10 yds. The longer sight radii pistols seem to do better there.

The shield is perfectly legal in the ssp division,or esp if it has the modifications to put it there.

I use an M&P9fs in USPSA shoots. I am terribly slow, and routinely finish matches at the very bottom of the score sheet, but the shooting is practical, rather than shooting paper targets in a box. I tried shooting a single stage with my 9c, but it wasn't for me, however the Shield has a nicer grip, and may be more favorable.

There are several shooters there who use single stack 1911's and Glocks, as well as a guy who shoots a revolver, and all do well.
