M&P Mag release issue

Has anyone had any problems with mag release? I carried my M&P Shield in a kydex holster on my hip with an iwb holster of course and my mag release rusted up has anyone had this issue. I called Smith and Wesson and they sent me a new mag release, I installed it of course and it rusted up as well.

That is odd. No problem with mine.

Yes, this is a common issue. The steel in the mag catch will rust from the sweat.

Are you saying the actual spring bar rusted?

The mag release gets rusted on the inside. I figured it was from sweat. The second time it got rusty after I installed the new release was bad enough that it wouldn't budge. I had to free it up with a hammer and barrel pin punch. I coated it with gun grease and started carrying back up.

On the M&P, when carried IWB, I recommend coating the mag release with Frog Lube. I also recommend updating that coating every two weeks or so.

I guess I better check mine again. I just cleaned it, but I didn't see any rust. I've been carrying it IWB for over 3 years. I shoot it, field strip it, and clean and lube it monthly. How often do you clean and lube yours Batman?

Carried mine iwb during and after flood of Aug. 2016. No problem noted. I sweat alot. Enough to bleed dye from belt into pants. Yet no rust or corrosion of any sort. Maybe your PH is high? Mother in law can tarnish gold. Bro in law can stop a battery powered watch. [emoji15]

I got lucky, and saw a thread about the rust on this forum, in time to investigate. It had just started to rust and seize up, but managed to push it out with a bit of extra effort, and treat it and the mating surfaces with TW25b. Hasn't happened again since then.

I can't count the number of times I've read something here and gone to the safe to look at something on a gun I own, but was unaware of, and learn from it.
