Hi Waymor and welcome to the S&W forum. I live in Atlanta and picked one up for $399.00, they've been selling at that price for a while.

As far as a next gen S&W, my opinion for what it's worth is I don't think a next gen is coming, I think something would have been leaked by now if it were going to happen. Gun sales are probably pretty flat right now so they offer the FS9 at a good price and run specials for free mags all in attempt to keep sales moving. You also have to consider S&W has made rolling changes (improvements) to the M&P line and has them running better than they ever have so I don't know if they want to mess with things.

On the other hand it's been what 10 years since they introduced the line so maybe it's time for a face lift, get rid of the hinged trigger, make night sights standard, refine the trigger a little more and give it all a fresh new look to compete with the VP9, the Walther PPQ and the like and call it the deluxe model. What better way to increase sales than to introduce new models, everyone likes to have the latest and greatest.

the other 2 big players (glock and springfield) have released upgraded models over the last several years. seems S&W should follow suit.

M&Ps were going for ~$399 in my area around the first of the year. The price inched up for a while, now hovering around $400-450. Shields are typically right around $300.

Hey, tailfins would look cool along with a grenade launcher on top of the slide, I'd be in for one.:D

I think I'd have to mount a grenade launcher M-203 style on mine. (no room left on the top)

Waymor, welcome to the site, this kind of thread drift is normal here. ;)

One could question how much of an upgrade Glock has made. The teething problems with the various Gen 4 models were epic. Among other things, the 40s still malfed on a regular basis with no readily identifiable consistent cause, even without a mounted light, and the 9s did not work reliably. I know cops whose agencies went through miserable experiences with the pistols and even worse with the "service". (And I am not a Glock hater; got two, and they are the pistols I am most likely to carry.)

FWIW, S&W has been making incremental changes/improvements all along too. Hard use/high volume shooters have given them feedback that at least to some extent has been effective. (Some of the barrel issues with the FS9 have been addressed; some related issues may not have been.) I am pretty sure that the odds of having a problem with any major manufacturer's service pistols are pretty much similar across the board, even though there are some I would avoid. If I had to carry a .40, it would be an M&P, with an X300U and a quality RDS, especially if Safariland would get off their backside and make the 6354 for the M&Ps.

IMHO, these big players were just playing catch up to Smith with the new models. But... I think the tailfin idea should be brought up at the next S&W engineers meeting.

$400 approximately has been the individual law enforcement officer price without night sights for a long as I can remember. I don't know if S&W is coming out with a new model down the road; however, I understand that the gun market is currently pretty saturated (someone told me Colt had dropped the MSRP on rifles and pistols significantly - although they're also going through bankrupcy proceedings again...).

you are right about COLT, i lost 150.00 on my m4 carbine in 3 months after purchase.
