It's pretty common for someone to come here asking about parts. Things break or are difficult to put together or maybe have a function that needs further explanation. Because we're not all gunsmiths, the names of many of the parts are unknown. So, we make up names. "That thingy in front of the trigger" or "The part on the back" or "The exjector is not moving correctly." Whatever we call it, we all need some common ground to help each other effectively.

Therefore, I decided to put together these pics. I have tried to identify all the parts commonly talked about. You will notice that some numbers are missing from the sequence. That is because I tried to number the parts the same way S&W numbered them in their exploded diagram and some parts are hidden inside and can't be seen. No need to list them here.

Also, there are numbers that go beyond the parts list. I've decided to include some nomenclature that is either a part S&W didn't identify or a feature commonly talked about.

If I've missed something or something is incorrect, please tell me. I'll correct or add whatever is necessary to make this a quality reference.

Enough babble, here's the pics:

19. Locking Block/Sear Housing Block Coil Pin

21. Trigger Headed Pin
22. Magazine Catch
23. Frame Tool
24. Grip Strap.
25. Frame Block (this is where the thumb safety would be if you had one)
26. Cocking Serrations
27. Accessory Rail
28. Sear
29. Trigger Bar (it should be noted that S&W considers this and the trigger as one assembly)
30. Sear Disconnect Lever
31. Magazine Disconnect Lever (not all M&Ps have this)
32. Trigger Return Spring
33. Ejector

This is a S&W M&P .40S&W Full Size in the pictures. The caliber is irrelevant because all M&Ps, except the Shield, have these same parts. I don't have a Shield so, cannot take pictures of it.

The full size .45 in addition to #26 (Cocking Serrations) has Forward Cocking Serrations near the muzzle.

There's more to the M&P than just the gun though. There is also the magazine so:

B. Magazine Butt Plate
C. Magazine Butt Plate Catch
D. Follower
E. Magazine Spring

Number 33

If I've missed something or something is incorrect, please tell me. I'll correct or add whatever is necessary to make this a quality reference.

I see the number 33 in the photo on the ejector, but no number 33 in the parts list.

Let me also say thanks for the effort to put this together!

Well done!

It's unfortunate that S&W doesn't provide an exploded view and parts list in their owner's manuals; doing so used to be common practice with guns and tools. Probably part of the "No User-Servicable Parts Inside" movement.

There needs to be some part officially called the "Thingammy." Every complex device has one; you hear people talk about them all the time.

Likewise, the "Gizmo."

i'll do a search on how to save this thread. any info on blueprints or info on complete parts breakdown. thanks for any info or locations.

Rastoff,
Any way to make your post a PDF? I'm not very computer literate (at least not enough to do something like I'm asking). It would be nice to print it out.

Thanks Rastoff & Randy! This should be a Sticky. You know that when someone wants to look at it it'll be on page 176 by then. (Probably me, lol)

I noticed that you forgot to number the doohickey & the @#*%$.

I see the number 33 in the photo on the ejector, but no number 33 in the parts list.
Thanks for the catch. I fixed it.

Bkreutz,
Yes, I can make it into a PDF. Send me an email and I'll respond with a PDF for you: [email protected]
Be sure to include your screen name and what you want. I get lots of emails and need to be sure I know what you're asking for.

Give me a little time to work on it. I made one right quick, but the pics are too small. Don't worry though, I'll get 'er done.

Request sent, take your time and thanks:)

I was able to copy and save to a word document just for safe keeping! (with pics)

Rastoff, excellant work! I agree it needs to be a sticky and a PDF too. Many will benefit from your labors including me. Thanks.

Rastoff, thank you for your time and efforts on this. I also think it would be great to have it as a sticky for the same reasons mentioned above.

Great job

Thanks.. I needed it. Already made a blunder on a term yesterday and I prefer to use the correct term! LOL

Request sent

Outstanding -- thanks for your effort. I think this thread ought to be "saved" up top for easy reference. Not sure how that happens.
