So, if you had a chance to buy a 5" M&P Pro used for less than new, would you choose the used one over a new one? Especially if the used one only had a few hundred rounds though it.

It would depend. How much less is the price? Do you see any unusual signs of wear and tear on the pistol that indicates more use than the current owners claims?
To me, weapons are much like vehicles, how they are broken in and maintained when new makes a great difference in how well they continue to function properly and for how long.

Your profile says you are not new to firearms, USPSA competition and own an M&P 40c. Field strip, examine, and reassemble that 5" Pro. Check for proper wear and function, and, if you have a few snap caps, use them to enhance the function check. The M&P Pro 5" can be had for $580 new/shipped. With only a few hundred rounds it is still new. And it's probably desirable for Practical Shooting Competitions given a longer line of site. I'd consider it if the price was in the $400-500 range.

Hood and Twist

I was in the same predicament you are in and my research led me to recently purchase of a new one. The prices on the used ones were almost as much as new. Also, Smith swapped out the barrels as of October 2012. I'm certainly not saying that anything prior to 10/12 is junk, but the fact remains Smith did change barrels for a couple of reasons. The link below will mention the FS9mm; however, it applied to the Pro Series as well.

dfhawkins, I had a Steyr in 40 S&W and I traded it for my 9c. I like shooting 9's more than 40's. The gun I am looking at online is $500. The owner says that it only has 250 rounds through it. They bought another gun, that is why they are selling it. It was made at the end of 2011. (like Dec or Nov as I recall, I think it was Dec). Also, the person selling it is the original owner and they never registered it with S&W.

Yes, this was a few years back and a pre-2012 model. It did not have any accuracy issues. Sold it to a friend and it's still going strong.

I think this is a reasonable price for this gun. However, it would depend on condition for me. If it looked new, no marks or residue, then yes, I'd get the used one. Otherwise I'd get the new one.

I try to buy used as often as possible as you can save quite a bit sometimes, but also run the risk after getting a gun with some kind of issue as I had in the past.

I did think about that.. However, the current/original owner never registered it with S&W. So as far as Smith and Wesson is concerned, I would be the original owner.

Something off topic.. My youngest is in a cleaning mode.. She is cleaning out the hall closet and found a S&W Performance Jacket that I got years before I got a S&W. I had forgotten that I had that jacket.

Honestly, for only a $100 difference in price, I would buy a new 5" pro.

The lifetime warranty only goes to the original purchaser, doesn't it? That'd be worth $100 to me right there just to keep the warranty. Plus, anyone on the internet can say it's only got 250 rounds through it in order to sell their gun.

Edit: just noticed that you said since they never registered, that you'd be the original owner in S&W's eyes. In that case, if the inspection looks like a new gun to you, I'd probably go for it too.

I was short a little over $100 for the used M&P. Well the darling husband came home from work and gave me the $ I needed to get the gun. I also talked to the seller and while he did not lower the price, he is now including shipping. Excited!!

Shipping for free when it was going to cost before is indeed lowering the price. Especially when you consider it has to be shipped by second day air at the slowest. You saved at least another $25.

Good for you.

$25 is what was listed for shipping. The original auction was opening bid of $500.01, but it now for $520 with $25 shipping. So the seller sold it to me for $500 shipping included. A local shop only charges $20 for the FFL transfer. So the gun will be mine for a total of $520. All the sellers feedback is excellent and it is repeatedly stated that the guns he sells are exactly as advertised. I am excited!

I bought the new Pro Core .40L and now with the 9mm barrel and Leupold Deltapoint, I don't ever see myself getting rid of it. It is just too good a shooter and soft recoil and now extremely versatile, and reliable.

Congrats on your purchase I"m sure you will feel the same with yours as i do with mine. Can't wait to hear how it shoots after you receive it.

I paid $450 for a like new 5" Pro 9 a couple months ago. When it came in my dealer said if the chamber flag would have been in place he would have assumed it was brand new.

You should be. smoking deal on a fantastic gun. Well Done!

FWIW, I like shooting my Pro over all other 9mm's in my safe.
