I put another rapid 250rds through the 40 today and still no magazine drops. I believe they have fixed the issue with the never ones. Mine was test fired from s&w on 09-04-12 if anyone is curious.

Thats good to hear! Hopefully mine is fine as well... I wonder if we should get some calipers out and check the later production run's numbers to an earlier production run.

Just got back from the range with my .40 Shield...

I had sent it back to smith and wesson because the 7 round mag was dropping. Smith and Wesson returned my gun after replacing the mags and adding the "dimple" in each mag. The magazine catch was NOT replaced.

After putting about 115 rounds through it i am very happy to report that there were zero mag drops and zero malfunctions in general. I am glad its fixed and i hope the mags are being produced with the dimples currently as i would love to buy some extra mags.

Now that I have been able to fire this gun comfortably without any malfunctions I am confident in saying this is one of the most comfortable, accurate and fun guns i have ever shot. I am so pleased with it. All issues aside this is a kick *** little gun. Now i just need to order a crossbreed supertuck for it...

I also thought about the crossbreed for my .40. But after trying out a holster my buddy had, I immediately knew what I was going buy.

This is a Galco that is made for the compact m&p 9/40. I had to do a very small bit of filing to make the .40 Shield fit properly. For some reason a small part on the slide would hang on the holster and the gun wouldnt seat far enough down. But now its fixed, and I will say im highly impressed with this holster. And its comfortable as hell.

Hi Smitty357....Could you please tell us what are your prefix letters DX_ ?? I am trying to figure out if my shield is affected.

Also if anyone could post the new measurements of the new mags without the dimples that would really help...

Thanks Much

Mine is a DXY and late in the numbers. Pretty close to the next prefix of letters.

PS: I dunno about you guys, but I have also shot plenty of the 9mm rounds through the 9mm barrel and the 9mm clips all in the .40 frame. I dont see anything affected in that direction either.

That might help narrow things down as a possible fix between your numbers and mine.

My 40 mag dropper is

serial # DXY3xxx

spent case dated 08-16-2012

Would be nice to hear that the 9mm setup is working fine in the 40 dropper frame. This would help confirm that the issue all along was the 40 mags, and with S&W adding the mag dimpling to the 40's, makes things even clearer.

the dealer/LGS sells them for what ever they want... Retail is "Suggested" as 449. thats what i got mine for. others get them for cheaper or more. so i think it has to do with the shop its self, if they can order enough of them they get a break, so they sell them cheaper.

I purchased both the guns Saturday the Shield 9 & 40. The owner kept his word and sold the 40 for $ 379.00 and the 9 for $ 399.00. I think that was a good deal. I took the 40 to the range Sunday and after 200 rounds no drops with the extended mag. Know here the confusing part, I shot about 100 rounds using the extended mag in the 40 I already own and that was dropping the mag. However this mag did not drop out of that gun. No dimble, however it seemed tighter that my old one, maybe because it was new. To confuse the issue the mag I ordered off Ebay did not fall out either. What the H..l is going on here? The one from Ebay wasn't as tight, but it held up to 200 rounds. Now I wish I hadn't put the dimple in the original mag. I am sending the old 40 back to S&W because of a sight issue, but I am sending the extended mag with the dimble and asked them to replace the mag catch. Not to start a panic, I was trying to install XS Sights and the old ones would not move with a brass punch, I took it to the gunsmith and he destroyed the original sights and my XS Sights, he said they must of been glued down with the wrong adhesive, which doesn't explain destroying the XS Sights. B.S. He said they would order me new XS Sights and wouldn't charge me for the labor, like I would ever let them work on my guns again. Now for the original ones he said they would not replace them. I shot my wife's 9, it was great, she will love it, no recoil. I am going to put another 400 round through the new 40 and if I still don't have problems, I have another CCW. Serial DXX.

dxy and now mine is dropping... arrived at the factory today and the rep mentioned on the phone it was more of a magazine issue. Wonder why they need your pistol back then unless they want to test fire it and make sure they don't need to replace the mag catch spring ect...

FedEx showed S&W received my 40 last Wednesday.

Besides mag drop, I also told them to correct rear sights that overhang off the left and shoots high and left, as well as do something about the measured 9.5 lb trigger to bring it closer to the advertised 6.5lbs.

Today FedEx called with delivery scheduled for Thursday. S&W shipped the Shield back out on Tuesday. So they had it less than 5 business days. Great? Sounds too good to be true with the other issues I was having. Based on the repairs done to my S&W 500, I am guessing the sights and trigger will be the standard reply of "range tested and within spec".

Got my Shield back yesterday (DXT####) from Smith and Wesson for the mag drop issue and they say they "Replaced Mag" and "Range Tested/Meets Spec". Looks like they dimpled my existing mags to me. Drove straight from FedEx to the range and ran 150 rounds through it without any issues using both the 7 round mag and the 6 round mag.
It was a fun time and very nice to not worry about the mags disengaging, amazing how much better you shoot!
Took the Shield to the range for the second time after receiving it back from S&W for the mag drop issue. Put 100 rounds through it using both the 6 & 7 round mags. Not a problem what so ever.

Looks like I have to eat my words.

The repair order shows:
Complaint: Magazine Catch.
Repaired: Replace Mag.
Complaint: Shoots High.
Repaired: Replace Front Sight.
Complaint: Rough Double Action.
Repaired: Adjust Trigger Pull.
Repaired: Range Tested/Meets Spec.

Haven't tested it yet, but mags now have dimples. The rear sight was moved to the right and no longer hangs off the left. Front sight looks taller, but not sure. I mentioned that I shoot 180gr bullets and thought it needed a taller blade. Trigger? Have the Apex kit ready to go in, so that no longer matters to me, but for others, this is a good sign that they appear to take a look at trigger pull and adjust if needed.

Overall excellent service, especially with "from my home, back to my home" in 7 business days.

Just received my shield .40 back yesterday. As I posted before serial DXY3xxx with almost 600 rounds before the mag drop issue started. I sent it back for mag drop issue and sights... The gun would shoot low and extremely left. I can accept the low part but so far left..no way. My full size piece is a Walter P99as also .40 cal and I have no problem at 100 ft putting 10 rds into a 2inch group. The repair letter sent back stated as follows adj. r/s and replace mags. The rear site looks a little different and the mags fit better. Originally I told s&w that the mags are undersized and you could twist hard enough they would drop. They did not want to hear this. What i did before sending back to s&w was to add a half inch shim about .013 in thickness to the back bottom of the mags and the problem went away, no rattle or drops even after another 100 rds. I returned for repair anyway. To the range in the morning for a test, will report back. Local shop had the magtech 165 and 180 gr 50 ct for $15.00 a box, so I grabbed a case.

As a firearms instructor, I think you are putting two much trigger finger on the trigger. This normally causes the gun to move slightly as you pull the trigger. Low left is the most common problem for right handed shooters.

Dry fire your pistol! This will help!

I qualified with my shield tonight. The qualification course consisted of various shots from 7 yards to 25 yards. 93% score.

I would like to assist anybody who blames the gun for not being accurate! There are drills and skills that can make your gun hit what you point it at.

put another 100 rounds thru the shield today. had 2-3 FTF every mag with the American Eagle... went back to Magtech and Federal and went to 0 FTF's.

Another 100 rounds of ammo through my .40 Shield without any mag drop issue with 6 or 7 round. This is 350 rounds without any issues since I got the pistol back from Smith & Wesson. Am I happy? I'm Happy! :D
