M&P Shield 9mm frame cracked

Sure is a shame that this happened...but the good thing is your LGS stepped up for you. You hear about so many these days that just tell you to deal with the manufacturer & distance themselves from the transaction.

That's the truth

Yes I did. I removed the slide and inspected everything and I didn't notice any cracks but that doesn't mean it wasn't already there

Do you have any pics of the crack? Will you post here please? If not, where on the frame is it located specifically?

damn I really want to buy a shield to add to my Fullsize 40 but I keep hearing about this on this website.. Im not sure I can get my head past the posts... what should I do

If you want one, get one. If everyone that hasn't had a problem with their Shield posted about it, there wouldn't time or space for any other topics. I just read about 'em, and keep on shootin.

Anything manufactured of parts can fail especially when you put the stress of firing a bullet into the equation.

I've never heard of a frame cracking and I'm on a number of forums... not to worry though $hit happens..

For the OP I can put money on it won`t happen to him again..

I'm going to shoot the new one after work today so I'll post if anything else happens

I shot about 100 rounds through my new shield today and it went great!!! I'm very happy with it now and can't wait to shoot some more.. I definitely need to get the pinkie extension for the 7 rd mag. I just don't feel like I can get a good grip on it.

Congrats! I recommend the Pearce Grips brand. Excellent. Feels and looks like it should come stock with the Shield.

A cracked frame in any M&P is unusual -- I haven't seen a posting on one before this. Odds are that it was manufactured incorrectly rather than it was a design flaw, since so many seem to be functioning well.

I don't think anyone should swear off buying Shields or any other M&P based on this one report. And the S&W customer service is very good, so should something similar happen to any S&W pistol, the owner will not suffer any financial loss.

I didn't get this lucky

I fired my shield for the 1st time and i didn't even get though the 1st clip and it failure to ejected ripped the side of the shell out and logged in the barrel and blew out the clip. This happened 3 time's though the next 30 rounds. So I contacted Smith and Wesson they said send it in. They said it went though there what ever and it wasn't a defect in manufacturing and your out of luck. Next I emailed them they said Joe will issue a new gun for you. Next he said the same thing but now he said the frame was cracked. They also said they won't honer there warranty. Bs is now I'm stuck with a 400 dollar paper weight.

Plus to top it off they included a place where i could buy one for 339. Like i would ever buy one more if the first one didn't even last 30 rounds.

Btw i was shooting new ammo and it wasn't plus p stuff

Hmmm, something doesn't add up there.

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry you had a bad experience. A few questions to clarify?

What type of shield was it (9 or 40)?

Specifically, what kind of ammunition did you use?

Could you just confirm this statement:

"... it failure to ejected ripped the side of the shell out and logged in the barrel and blew out the clip. This happened 3 time's though the next 30 rounds."

...so you are saying that over the first 30 rounds, ever fired from the gun, that a round was lodged in the barrel and the magazine was forcibly ejected from the pistol? Three times?

If S&W gave you a written response to your warranty claim, what specifically did they say?

It was a 9mm , 2 it was the Case that got stuck in the barrel. the bullet went though just fine and yes it blew the magazine out every time the round fte. Witch happened 3 times in the 1st 30 rounds and the same rounds I was firing though a model 3915 my old gun.

the letter was as follows

After review of the weapon they have determined the damage to the weapon was not for defects in materials or workmanship. We do not recommend firing this pistol as it is not in a safe condition to shoot.

Then they offer to sell me one for 339. Like i'd ever buy a smith again,.

From what i heard later it had a crack in the frame.

Not only that my wife's Body guard was throwing brass over the top of the gun and in front of it. Witch worries me too. I don't think i want to keep that one either.

And the ammunition? Specifically?

Also, was this pistol bought new (I.e. You were the first to fire it, ever) or used?

Blowing out the magazine, that could be saying multiple things.

- The shooter, for some reason, is accidentally hitting the mag release while firing.
- The round is not going fully into the chamber, and when fired, the blowback from not being seated is blasting out the magazine. That could include having a case split.
- The mag release is defective / badly mounted / the mag is not seating properly - and falls out because of the recoil.

All that said, if a round cannot be extracted, and has to be knocked out, I certainly would not try to fire it again until I understood the problem.

A split case, if it is factory ammo, is a "first round stops use of that box" event.
