I was on the waiting list about 6 months. I was getting 'antsy" thinking I'd never see it, so went shopping and found a Springfield XDm 9mm. I love that gun. Then the Shield came in. To be very honest, the two are almost identical both in size, and performance. So, it's a toss up on which is really the better of the two. So, I switch back & forth on which one I carry. Not much difference between the 2.

They also may have non MA (standard) version in stock as well. I have the 40 and love it. If you absolutely can't live with the 40 than watch the "M&P Shield in stock" thread here and find one online. From the time I decided I wanted a shield it took 1-week and found it on D&L and had it in hand two weeks later.

I've had a Walther PPS 9 for years. Highly recommend it, but the last one I saw in my local shop was over 700 bucks!
I don't see that value in it, and I really like the gun. I only put it in the safe when I got my Kimber Solo Carry 9 running reliably.

I don't understand all the whining about having to wait months, or even weeks, to get a Shield. I see them for sale frequently on the Internet, at what I consider to be reasonable prices i.e. at or less than MSRP plus shipping and FFL transfer. As several posters have already stated, try D&L Shooting, Kittery Trading Post, or G&R Tactical. I personally know of 3 people including me that have bought a Shield from one of these sellers within the past 2 months. All are reputable sources and frequently have both Shield 9 and 40 in stock. It may take a few days of diligently watching these websites, and act quickly when you see one in stock at a price you are willing to pay. Recruit a couple of buddies to help you watch if you can. Getting a MA compliant one may take a little longer but both the first 2 places I listed have had them in stock within the past 2 weeks.

Bought my Shield this week. Our gun store has had them all along. I am having trouble racking the slide and locking it open. I have weak, small hands and it is a problem, but I know I will need to break in. My Bodyguard was the same way, but now it racks smoothly and is no longer stiff after putting about 500 rounds through it. I hope I can master this gun, it will be a challenge since it is bigger. Has anyone noticed that it is hard in the beginning. The mags are hard to load too. Can't wait to shoot it, but I want to make sure I can rack the slide easier before I go to the range. I have been shooting only 1 year, 4 months with a pistol. I started with a revolver.

Yeah you really need to try a shield if there is doubt. But if you decide you do want one try Kittery Trading Post or D&L Hunting they have been getting a steady supply of them lately and D&L had MA compliant ones last night when I checked

I feel your pain though on the waiting list thing, been waiting on several lists for a Bersa Thunder UC Pro 40 for over 6 months now

Did you check by phone if D&L had the Mass Compliant shield in stock? There website has had it marked in stock, but it hasn't been for over 2 weeks.

Racking the slide (and locking it open) is more about technique than strength. For a good tutorial see Rack the Slide | Cornered Cat. As for loading the mags, the springs will loosen over time and use. Best advice - buy an Uplula. You will not regret it. Shoot straight and be safe!

I wasn't even looking for a Shield when I got mine. An employee at the store told me that they were in stock so I thought I would try one since they were so hard to get.

You might want to do some foot work to find one in your area. Because some dealers are saying that smith & wesson is saying that the shield are on back order until sometime in September. I ordered my shield online back in December 2012, but I got a call last week from a local dealer that a 9mm shield had arrived, because I also put myself on the list back then. So now I am the owner of a 9mm.

Roger couldn't agree more. I plan to keep my sweet heart wife forever (25 yrs and happy) and like wise for my Shield 9mm (1 yr 1 month and happy)

Last fall, I was jonesing for a sub-compact ccw. At the time I was carrying a full size glock (funny how my phone & tablet always auto-correct that to block) 17 but wanted something that was a little more versatile. I rented several .40s & quickly realized that the 9mm sub would work much better. So I tried a lot of different types & found the Beretta Nano to be an excellent shooter in it's original 6+1 round format. The Nano was actually tied with the Kahr, but the Nano won out because it was readily available. The Nano has been elevated to edc status with the addition of 3 eight round mags. My disclaimer here is that I've never shot the 9mm shield due to it not being available for rent or purchase. So it's possible that my mind could change on this subject.

Footnote - after my experiment with the sub .40s, I happened to give the full size m&p .40 a whirl to burn up the range ammo that I had to buy with the rentals. And boy did I fall head over heels for it! The m&p .40 is now my favorite range gun. Thanks to this forum, I'm also considering getting a 9mm barrel & mags for a conversion.
