M&P Thumb Safety - where to get a spare?

Folks,

I have been a bit disappointed that there is no Crimson Trace Laser Grip (LG-661) available for the M&P with thumb safeties. However, I found a thread where the owner cut the right side thumb safety lever off, and was able to fit the crimson trace grips on with no problems. Since I am right handed, I don't need ambi anyway. But I like the thumb safety.

So before I would contemplate doing this, I wanted to get a new thumb safety so I can put it back to original if I wanted to. Is there are source out there for them?

I purchased an entire 45 sear block assembly including safety from Brownells some months back. They were a reasonable price at the time.

Well, I wish Brownell's sold it but it is not listed on the schematic. So I called the fine folks at S&W and they took pitty upon me and shipped me a new one. Got it but they shipped me the wrong one part. Looks more like the slide release :(

I just dug the spare sear block assy. I purchased out of my spares kit. The part number, 940-001-017 and description match with that in the link posted above.

Mine is complete including thumb safety and associated mechanism.

But that is the one for the 45 ACP? I need the 9mm one :(

Can't help you with a 9. Buy a 45 and then you can get a spare. You need more than one gun anyway.

While the sear housing assembly isn't broken down to its component parts on the regular online Parts List, it is broken down that way in the in-house lists on the factory computers. I've ordered smaller parts as an armorer for sear housing blocks. I don't know if the customer service folks will sell separate parts directly to folks who aren't armorers, though.

Anyone have the factory part number handy for the 9mm/40 Compact w/thumb safety for the sear housing assembly?

I am looking for the same thing, I called S&W and they gave me a part number that I gave Brownells special order girl who is going to call me back, when I get the information I'll post it here or PM you.

I spoke with a weapons tech at brownells and he said the schematics for the M&P are from a while back and do NOT show the safety you and I are looking for.

Does anyone know if you can just remove the whole safety and still have full functionality?

Yes, the thumb safety can be removed and the gun will remain fully functional. I have done just that to my full size 45. It is not dificult.

Did you buy the plugs to fill in the gaps? & if you did where did you purchase them at?

I'm just making sure I am doing this correctly,

I got hold of Kenny from Speedshooter (he is a member of this forum) and they are sending me the thumb safety. It is not listed on their web site. They do not have the sear assembly. I also spoke to Brownell's and they also told me that they would order it if I gave them the part number - which I don't have :(

I was given the following by S&W 39-210-00-00 by Dean Batchholder yesterday on the phone.

I'd like to know what part number he's sending because I sent an email to them yesterday, & got the following:

"Sorry, do not handle any parts for those pistols SSI"

This was in reference to the M&P 40 cal

I read your post again, and if "Kenny" is sending you one is it a S&W thumb safety? and if it is than he'd have the part number for the S&W "Ambidextrous" thumb safety I'd think.

Please let us know how you made out. I still have not heard back from Brownells special order dept but than again I believe that they were shut down for a while........

The following is from a post earlier this year. I don't remember who wrote it.

"I removed the saftey levers from my Midsize.45...The frame plugs are $3 apeice, I don't know if they'll send them to you for free, but, they won't break the bank if you have to buy them. Product code#'s 392460000 (Left side of frame) 392470000 (right side of frame)
"

I didn't bother getting them as they are merely cosmetic in my opinion.

Kenny at Speed Shooters did not mention the part number, but the (ambi) thumb safety he sent was the correct one for the M&P 9C :D. It was $12 shipped. I think that one works on the 40 cal too.

You guys have any luck getting a replacement safety?

I called S&W, they said they didn't sell it, but gave me a part number.

I called both Brownells and Speedshooters, both of which said they didn't carry that part.

Brownells said that the part number leads to a magazine for a .45acp.

Any help would be great guys.

Hey there Slave

I am waiting on Kenny from from Smith & Wesson® Performance Accessories from Speed Shooter Specialties he sent me a safety, so once I get it which should be buy Friday I'll post what I get as far as info. Or goto the website and call and ask for Kenny.

The place I got my M&P from has a gun smith and cut the right side off for me, really beautiful work, cost me 10$ to me well worth it.

thanks. I hope to get the right side cut off, and the left side cut down. Not in half the long way, but a ridge or two cut off. That safety is way way too wide, it digs in me back. With a crossbreed supertuck it should be okay.

I ordered some frame plugs for it also.

Anyone ever able to track this down? I am looking to add a safety to my 9C and just need the lever at this point.

Thanks.

I got mine from Speed Shooter Specialties three years ago, so I do not know if they still carry them.

I do thank you al for your help and guiding's. Your thoughts are the same, it is my thinking that S&W; should not ignore their customer's request. The pistol is like a car that would call for parts replacements.

S&W is to be responsibly and have those parts for their customers like you and I. That is the way of the customers relationship, when we purchase their Pistols hopping that when we need their help they should replace or sell out that parts that we need.

Good info, I am picking up a 9c today with safety and may remove the right side too, if I decide on the CTG. Good to know!

The levers are prominent for sure and might shave the left side down a bit too.

The next question is: Are there any threads on holsters that may or may not be too compatible w/ the 9C thumb safeties??? I am a bit concerned it would be flipped off (or on for that matter) rubbing against a holster guard or my side.

Flame Red, you've got your problem solved, right? The part number should be on your invoice & I would be interested in knowing what it is.

The part number 39-210-00-00 isn't a S&W part number. I've never seen them use a part number with dashes. It is more likely 392100000, & that doesn't come up as valid on the online stores. Looking at a S&W parts fiche they don't seem to offer the part separately. I don't know what the solution is & would be interested in knowing the answer.

i Just purchased M&p 40 without the thumb safety. i would like to have one put on, i cant seem to find anything online as to where to find one. Does anyone know where i might be able to find a thumb safety for my gun. Thank you for your time..
